Glass pint glasses to be replaced with plastic

Ergh I hate drinking from a plastic pint, it always tastes warm and flat.

While I'd support them being used in dodgy areas and clubs etc, I'd hate to see them being used in small traditional pubs.

This just seems like an arse about face way of solving the problem, the issue isn't the glass it's the muppets who get completely bladdered every weekend. Educate people that you don't have to drink like a fish every night and that having a pint or two is much more socially acceptable.

I have NEVER seen anyone smash a glass over anyone or thing. Maybe this just needs to be implemented on the wrong side of each city.

^^^ this tbh...

they just need to implement it in problem areas - pubs on rough estates, known trouble spots, football pubs on matchdays etc...

on the opposite end of the spectrum ye olde english pub in some quiet village full of old men/real ale fans certainly doesn't require this and its prob of little benefit for a large portion of normal every day bars/pubs too.

99.9% safe? is that what your guesstimating at, i think you'll find its a lot lower than that.

How many pints are drunk each year? How many people are glassed each year?

I would be amazed if it is even close to 0.1% correlation.

OMG the irony this sucks! About 3 weeks ago i was involved in an incident where i hit someone in the face unaware at the time i had a 1/2 pint glass in my hand and shortly after i got arrested and im actually waiting till september to hear the verdict.

Now people are takin the **** by sayin you should have a plastic cup.

However wot i did was no more than an accident and i for one see no point in making plastic cups just make better glasses, ones that dont break so easily lol

OK aside from the fact that what you did is pretty special, how can you be unaware you're holding a 1/2 pint glass in your hand????

The whole reason they're even considering this is directly because people do really dumb stuff like that.

Maybe not, but I'd rather be fisted (wait, that's not the right word is it?) than glassed.

You'd rather be punched than glassed?

As for plastic glasses it might help but realistically if people want to cause injury to someone then they're likely to do it regardless. However if the aim is to minimise the chance of injury then why not go straight for the collapsible plastic cups that you get for camping?

Plastic glasses feel a bit odd in the hand when drinking as the weight is wrong but I guess I could get used to it again. I'm not sure of how much benefit this initiative will be but it isn't quite as daft as it appears at first glance - plastic glasses may also last longer than the 3 month average that conventional glasses have in pubs but they do tend to get a bit scratched/milky white after too much use.

Been to a couple of clubs where the glasses and bottles were plastic. Its the future people get used to it.

So which industry does this screw over then?

I don't want more plastic being produced. Why the **** can't some people just keep some things the same?

It's ****ing glass. Glass.

It's not going to kill old grandmothers and burn Churches.

Anything is a potential weapon.
But it is not right there in front of them (or in their hand) to smash someone over the head with.

Of course people can go and find anything to use as a weapon to assault someone with but most of the incidents involving glasses would now be non existent. People aren't going to stumble around looking for the closest item that could be used as a weapon.

Most of the violent incidents are spur of the moment.

And sure barstools and furniture may be used in assaults but I'd bet on it being a LOT less frequent than glassings. Obviously if bar stools do become a problem they will just require pubs to screw them to the floor.

More pointless and stupid ideas that fail to get to the root cause of the problem from our government...

Are we surprised? I'm not, they are incapable of actually suggesting that people are at fault, that parents are at fault, and that society needs a serious rethink in the UK as large parts of it no longer have any personal responisbility. The problem really is that the people they need to target are generally traditional labour voters...
