Advice for parents on buying a used sports coupe.

They've worked hard and want to enjoy what they've put in. My mum misses having the little bit of power that the 2.8 V6 4motion Golf they used to own had. Always had to be practical with having two sons, but now they want to treat themselves I guess.

I wish my parents were like yours :( My mum is off to vw tomorrow for a test drive as dad is away working abroad. I asked to go with her and what she was testing and her words were "oh some golf something or other" :(

And this is after for some horrible reason they decided an e39 5 series wasn't right for them and instead they should get a brand new car as "it'll last me 10 years" so they can only afford at most, a bottom spec golf :(

Still, I suppose anything is better than the toyota previa it'll be replacing they bought with 100k miles on and then put another 80k miles on it with only 1 oil change and no services in all that time.

Nice cars the 350Z. A great car that outperforms and outhandles its main competitor the TT. £13k is going to buy a fairly early model though which I believe had a poorly constructed interior compared to later models.

I went for the TT due to the better fuel economy, useable boot space and quality of construction (and looks imo :p)

Also worth considering the 1.8T 240bhp Audi TT. This should sit comfortably in the £13k 2 seats bracket.

Edit: Random example here

Good for your parents. If their looking at £13K 350Zs then I assume age and warranty are not quite so much of an issue for them? If so then the obvious alternatives are any of the sports/GT cars that have been listed in this thread. The only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned already in the thread, if they like a bit of power, is a Monaro. 2005 models are starting to fall into this price range now.

From what I can see the GT looks good but is otherwise rubbish in every way. It doesn't handle, it isn't built well, its slow, it's just... a pretty looking drive ornament.

A bit like the Brera!

Thought I'd look the Brera up..

We were disappointed by the Brera. The 2.2-litre petrol version is a competitive proposition, but at nearly £30,000 the 3.2 V6 variety is out of its depth. It’s not without appeal if you want a refined, interesting-looking touring car, but this is an Alfa Romeo and, perhaps naïvely, we were hoping for more. As it is, it’s too slow, too fat and too dull to drive to cut it against the best in the class

But that’s not the number we got when we put it on our own scales. We were so stunned by the 1765kg it registered on our equipment that our first instinct was that our scales were wrong – so we recalibrated, did the test again and the same number appeared. There are Jaguar XJ and Audi A8 limousines that weigh less than that.
