Man or WOman

Think it's kinda stupid that these things weren't all checked before the competition.

Have the athletes give all the information and then just double check.

This woman, must feel pretty ****** to be accused of been a man.

she did have high testosterone levels, maybe drugs? or naturally very masculine?

Given the birth certificate, I'm guessing the next question will be one of why she has such elevated levels of testosterone. I would expect them to be doing some investigations now to see whether thats naturally occuring or artificially elevated.

She is a very manly built woman, but what I cant quite get my head round is that Jacob Zuma (As heard on BBC Breakfast this morning) said the decision to investigate Semenya was both sexist and racist?!?

Now I understand how it may be construed as being sexist to a woman to call her a man, by why racist?, no one is questioning her skin colour and nationality, and if its because she is black then im sure someone on the sports governing body who have launched this investigation may be of African descent?

It seems strange to me to brand the sports governing body racist when its so clearly multi-racial when you see all countries represented fairly and equally in any event they qualify for.

Not a rant, just a little confused by it all :D

I suppose she could just be naturally more masculin, but with such a quick turn around in her time it has to be some out of body influence surely.

This also made me a little bit miffed

the Young Communist League of South Africa said she had been the victim of racism.

How is this in any way racist, a white or asian athlete would undergo the same screwtiny.

Because it seems whenever people can use the PC "Racist card" they can.

Its pretty straight forward. She is black and the person who decided that an investigation should happen was white. Thus, its automatically racism. I did read another article recently that someone walked past her in one of the stadium corridors and overtook her. Apparently that was racism too. There was a very brief inquest in which it was suggested that the solution to the racism was that all the caucasian athletes should walk a mandatory minimum of 2.5m behind her.

I won't be surprised if they find she has some underlying medical condition causing it. Whether or not she should be stripped of her title as a result I don't know, it's unfair for other competitors and it would be unfair towards her. I guess at the end of the day, if she can't help it, it's no different to Bolts long legs or Thropes big feet.

Maybe, it just seems a little silly of Zuma who is trying to bring South Africa far away from its apartheid past to a modern fully integrated and cohesive cultural nation to make completely flippant comments like that without any fore thought. Racist is a powerful word and someone in his position shouldn't use it so thoughtlessly.

Just pull her pants down and take a peek. Thats this argument stopped in like 10 seconds instead of all this.

If it was that simple it wouldn't have been so thoroughly documented in the news.
But of course the argument there is, if she was born with excessive levels of testosterone, regardless of having ovaries and a uterus her outer labia could be fused together, and have an enlarged clitoris that may resemble a small penis.
So it's very difficult to accurately test it via that.
She had to be visited by a gynaecologist, a psychologist and loads of doctors.
But imagine the humiliation- must be terrible to have it documented so excessively.

Thats all got me curious though...

Does anyone know how international athletics stands on the issue of transgenders?

If a male athlete was to go through the op, would he/she/it then be allowed to compete in the womens events? (and vice versa). Anyone know what the rules are on that?

hmmmmm no I don't tombstone, but I'd assume you'd have to compete as your sex on your birth certificate.
However, think about it - they'd been receiving "unnatural" hormones, so maybe they aren't even allowed to complete at all!

Indeed..I cant think of any transgender athletes, so I'm guessing this very issue hasnt arisen yet. Wonder what would happen when it did...

No doubt the athlete in question would say that its against their human rights or something as they are now 'legally' the opposite sex and so should be entered into the relative event.

But then regardless of the op there are still physical attributes remaining from the original gender which would surely be considered to be giving an unfair advantage over the other competitors.

Would be a really tough one for the athletics associations I reckon.

As I said in the main Athletics thread, the IAAF is so clearly racist, what with all those black sprinters they happily let win short-distance races, or all the africans that generally do well in distance running. How dare they not stop and test them!
