Project log: dedicated cinema room, with some hurdles to overcome.

Very nice, i'd be jealous if I wasn't in the process of doing something very similar :D

Can I ask how much paint you used and how many coats? I'm hoping 1.2L would do for a screen that size, plus a coat or two of some cheap B&Q white emulsion for an undercoat (or would that be a bad idea?).

Thanks man :)

I'm not certain how much paint I used. I think I used about 600ml of the high build primer (thinned) and I used more of the black widow paint than I had to, but I wanted 100% even coverage - it's so hard to tell how it is covering outside, it's only until you get a film on it that you can tell. I think I used close to a litre perhaps?

The masking is complete and works like an absolute charm! less than £10 to boot!

I've taken pics but dont have time to post them tonight. still need to do a 50/50 white/grey too

Masking those pesky black (grey) bars makes such a difference to the image, it's unreal. Parents are away on holiday ( probs after a break from me!) so when they get back I'm 100% sure they will start to see what I've been going on about so much!

oh and the IN80 projector seems to have developed a fault - just my look! The amp has aswell!

I know I said I could not post pics tonight, but could not resist.

The masking had to be the following:
-cheap
-easy to use
-adjustable
-versitile

I've had a very busy day today, well all week infact. I've not had time to watch films or work on the cinema, but while I was waiting for some primer to harden on another project I turned my attention to the masking.

I had already prepped the boards. I had them cut last week at B&Q. 2x 203cm x 11 inches (yea I know, metric and imperial but I cant remember the exaxt size in metric, and had to measure in inches for the fabric shop, as they could not work in metric :god:)

I used conatc adheasive to laminate the two sheets of hardboard. which was easier aid than done as the last person to use the contact ahesive ( there is a gallon tin of it) has ended up contact-ashesive-ing the lid to the tin. I had to drill a hole through the lid!

this is how it looked:

So today I rang around the local fabric suppliers, I knew one in particular which is a hop, skip and a jump away was open late on night so I rang them ont he off chance and enquired about velvet. they had one piece about 30cm x 150cm left and that was £17.50 odd  I asked if they had any alternative and they said no.

I popped down anyway and after seeing the velvet it turned out to be completly not what I was after and way too small anyway. after a lot of browsing and nearly settling for a sheet of cotton @ £5+/m I stumbled across this:

imgp0473g.jpg

now I must admit - this is the only time I've seen it looking brown. It's a synthetic 'velvet' and came in at a staggering £3.60 per metre! which I think is very very cheap, even compared to the cotton.

The picture does not show it but this stuff looks BLACK and is completly flat. when it's flatteneed out it reflects no light and just looks like a black hole. It's only the flash off the camera making it look the way it does.

I went about attaching it to the board:

and on with the install:
I've added annotations to the pictures.

I followed the link from your "skoda pickup / airbrush bonnet thread" in the motors section to here.

Have to admit thats one helluva'n impressive cinema room

Looking forward to further updates on both threads ;)

Looking good Ricky Bobby (:p), I need to get round to making some masks soon. Interesting that you shifted the picture up, rather than down? I would have though having one bar at the top would bring the picture closer to natural eye line?

Keep up the good work, I'm sure theres something you could airbrush in there :p.

That's going to be awesome. How much did the PJ cost you?

I'm doing a bit of projectering on a budget here - with the Optoma HD700X. Picked it up for around £400 this time last year, and skimped on the screen as well - £20 roller blind from ebay! I keep moving around though, moved three times since I've had it (Uni), and the rooms aren't exactly designed for it - white walls, lots of windows, mostly, and I'm not anywhere long enough to justify sorting out each room. But it's still awesome in the evenings/night, even if the contrast's a little low during the day.

Good luck with sorting out the final niggles.. and how's the pickup mural going?

I really like that room. Makes me want to go buy a Projector!

You should change your light switches and paint the Rad though. ;)

Rick,

Excellent work. I have really enjoyed following your thread.

I've been hooked on the big screen home experience for a few years now. I've got a Panasonic PT-AX100U LCD projector and a Gray Wolf drop down screen. I've just got the projector mounted on the top shelf of a bookcase. I use SD movies with an upscaling DVD player.

I didn't bother setting up the screen when I moved from my last place. I just shoot onto the painted white walls of the room. The whole room is white though. I'm getting envious of even your limited ability to black out the room. The darkened borders really enhance the contrast. The lack of splash back light from the rest of the room must help too?

I think I need to bat cave the next house's cinema room!

Could you describe what you did to work the sound and video (HDMI?) cables through the walls to the rear speakers and up to the roof for the projector?

Regards,

Sithuk

DON'T
even go there with the painting the radiator thing lol! it aint gonna happen, no matter how much I kick and scream. the radiator does not even need to be there. that room has an uncanny ability to be warm all year, and cools down rapidly when the windows are opened.

Thanks mate:)
It's really tough to get ideal conditions for projectors :( if you have white, or light walls it's going to make it harder. The fact of the matter is though, most projector friendly colours are not suitable for living rooms. so you do have to compromise somewhere. LCD projectors also, for the most part tend to have not as good black levels as DLP projectors, which does not help either :(

yes, the dark(er) walls do help the image, but the ceiling and close proximity of the door are still causing a little bit of a problem. nothing to really write home about though.

The black horizontal blinds have helped but I've put my roller black out blinds up now aswell. light still leaks through the sides but to be honest, a bit of masking tape stops that - just enough to pin the blind to the wall. when you close both sets of blinds it's impressive just how dark you can make the room during full sun light.

the nights are drawing in sooner and sooner though so it becomes much less of a problem

cables - there is a QED purple HDMI conecting the Bluray to the amp (this carried the 1080p video signal aswell as the sound signal), which is simply hidden down the back of the front units. THe speaker cable for the rears, and the 10 metre HDMI cable going tot he projector are under the carpet in a chanel cut into the underlay. the rear speaker cables go up the backs of the bookshelves on the back wall and through a hole in the back of the shelves - to the speakers

the front speakers, for now have been wall mounted and I've braided the cables. *to my amazement* - My dad asked me to chase the cables into the wall as he didnt want to be able to see them! so that's on the to do list.

Just goes to show what can be done with little space.

TV's just don't cut it! :p

Word!

I have to admit, when I was planning it out on sketchup In was thinking that the room was not as big as I thought it was. everythign seemed like such a tight squeeze on the program. in real life though it feels quite spacious - although it could be because I'm used to that room being my bedroom.

Good point... I'd prefer the image lower down rather than higher up - of course my dad does not (suprise suprise!) he wanted the screen nearly up to the bottom of the pelmet! I won that argument! (GET INNNNNNNN)

I can aways add two screws intot he top of the screen to hang the mask on, see how that works out. I dont have a reason for why I hung it on the bottom - ease I guess - easier to manage to hook it on lower down.

I think I paid about £1,050 or £1100 at the time - it was like the day before the price was hiked up to £1,399 or something silly. had to order it from sevenoaks in manchester (i'm in sunderland) could not ask for a better service from them and they lost out bigstyle having taking my money, realising they didnt have it in stock and having to re-order the projector at the higher price :( oh well.

those optima projectors are good mate! for the money they cost they give canny good results I think! nothing wrong with a screen ont he cheap either, all of my screens have been on the cheap so far. this one has cost me about £30!

gonna miss this setup when I leave for uni' the hall's rooms there are just not big enough for any kind of decent setup, so might have to get a one of those erm.. 'televisions' I think that's what they call them anyway.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys!, I'll get some pics up when there are some more majorchanges. The sofa has been ordered, so that will be here 'within 10 working days' so we dont have to sit on garden / camping chairs lol (which, are pretty comfy to be honest)
pickup bonnet is on long term hold at the moment, got loads of paintwork to do for other people!

any more questions just ask!

very good job, I wish I could make me a cinema room as well but living in appartements won't ever give me the opportunity to do it ;)
