OcUK Photo Comp - Season Eight : Round Eight - "Cosmic" DISCUSSION

Anyway, I'm sure this too will be taken the wrong way by somebody, wish I'd kept my mouth shut.

Sorry mate, im not getting at you.
Its a good discussion point, and a good point its makes is, if it can be done by photoshop and you cant tell, why do it normally at all, unless its is your choice and gives you a sense of achievement that photoshop doesn't.
Its a toughy.

Its an interesting conversation and it would not pay for us all to have the same opinion.

A lot comes down to interpretation. My interpretation of the using multiple images rule, is in the instance of bracketing on a tripod for HDR, or shooting star trails. For me its about having the tripod set up in the same position to take each shot in the same position and layering as appropriate.

For me, I still believe the photo should represent the original scene. SteveOBHave's photo adheres to my interpretation of the rules in the sense that the multiple images were all taken on a tripod positioned the same. However, I also feel that the 'wow' factor has come from the use of photoshop. (I am not dismissing its a terrific piece of art)

If you are taking a photo and changing it from the original scene by adding stuff that was not there in the first place, then surely this is digital art rather than photography? Photography may have played a small element, but when the wow factor has only come from the use of Photoshop then for me, its digital art. It has just become noticable the increasing amount of entries which have had their 'wow' factor added in post.

I am not a purist either, as I strongly believe that a level of post processing should be required. However, this should stop after the traditional suite of editing tools.

Not for one second am I saying that my opinion is the right one with regards to this competition. Its absolutely not my call. If I/we all were clear about what is/is not allowed then you would get no complaints from me. The very fact we are left to 'gamble' is even more annoying. :)

* One image per entrant (may be a montage consisting of two or more photos).
* If a montage is entered, all photos in the image will be judged on their relevance to each other as well as the theme.

Think that should really sum up this discussion point. A montage doesn't necessarily imply that the images should be taken from the same spot and combined to create the final image a la steveobhave, it can be seen in the way chronic has put together his image. now put your handbags away for this month :p

now put your handbags away for this month

i think a well mannered conversation is a good thing, its nice to see other peoples views. No one is right or wrong. I think HJ and chronic have both made valid points and it sometimes makes you look at things in a different light. sorry if my comments came across a bit brash no offence was inteded.

back on topic i really like wedges entry, willis and steve are both at the usual high standard, good stuff. and a well improved shot over the original chronic.
i've got a new idea for mine, hopefully i'll get the time to do it befor the end of the month.

sorry if my comments came across a bit brash no offence was inteded.

I was just making an off the cuff remark as usual to take the seriousness away from the 'talking point'.

I'd agree though valid points were made during the discussion but at the end of the day its up to the judges on how they score things and how the individual has interpreted the theme and the means that they have come up with the final image.

Personally I thought the rules were quite clear :p :D

ok redit, now with clouds i actually took, although not great clouds so not look as good anymore,
Wish i entered it with a day to go, because im bored of it now.

just had a thought, the judges are leaving it a bit late to announce last months winner.....4 days till end of the month for new theme ;)

They are, we weren't discussing the rules. I think the point may have passed you by ;)

no it didn't. but how people interperate the theme and how they present the final image will, at the end of the day, be judged on how it does or does not conform to the rules and marking scheme ;) whether its seen as a single photograph or more towards the digital art side of photography.

I'm gonna go out tonight and have a first crack at doing star trails. Hopefully it's clear skys tonight in the south west.

I'm not a very creative person....so this "cosmic" theme is lost on me. All I can think of is stars!
