5870 1.6 x faster than 4870

We can hope... unfortunatly they seem to have cooked up a bit of a monster with the GT300... that looks like being very fast and very expensive... and not easy to slim down for the mainstream cards without taking a big loss.

Hardware physics is something some developers have been asking for although thats probably not the main reason nVidia picked up on physx... I'm not sure what will happen with physx coz I know theres a couple more titles in the works that use it as much or more than batman does... yet nvidia seem to be commited to digging a grave for it.

I'd be disappointed if RV870 was less than the speed of a 4870X2, but it's not the end of the world if priced correctly.

GT300 will be a monster chip - lets hope nVidia have other ways to keep costs down as I don't think they'll want a repeat of the last year's price wars.

Even if its only in the same ballpark as the 4870X2 it won't have the dependancy on multi GPU scaling to perform well... I don't think we will see the full power of these cards initially anyhow as there real power lies in more complex scenarios than contemporary games present.

Guess it'll all come down to pricing then, as 1.6x 4870 speed is probably no better than the 4870x2 and I'd expect an overclocked GTX285 to run it fairly close.

I'm assuming the 5890 will just be a speed-bumped 5870 rather than anything radically different?

Would be nice to see some genuine behemoth performance cards released rather than just a boost to the mainstream enthusiast sector as we seem to be seeing of late. i.e. I'd like to see something offering GTX295 performance at say £200.

Currently I've got a GTX280, and while I think the 4890 offers good value, there's no real obvious upgrade paths out there just yet (at least not until we start seeing some DX11 games).

But you are comparing two GPUs to one. A 4890 can make mince meat out of a 295 for £129.

We need to look at single GPU's as the performance of dual GPU cards is so hit and miss.

I would normally wait for the new nVidia cards, as I have used nVidia exclusively since the Geforce 2, but I am going to go with ATI/AMD this time around, and I'm really looking forward to the release of these GPU's!!

@jigger, you say a 4890 can make mince meat out of the GTX295??

Surely this isn't true??

Maybe 2 x 4890's in CrossfireX...

Well as I said, a GTX285 isn't far off that level of performance (bearing in mind we're talking 1.6x 4870 best case scenario). And it'll have to be priced under £200 to be worthwhile given the 4890 is available at under £130. So like I said, we're just seeing a boost to that sector of the market rather than something revolutionary as we have seen from previous single card launches like 8800GTX and GTX280.

An improvement to the market? Of course. Worth getting excited about? Probably not.

The 295 is two cards but a lot of games will only use one of the cards. a 4890 is loads faster in this situation. Same go's for the 4870x2.

5850 is prolly in the 10-20% faster than 260/4870 ball park.

 You genuinely think a 5850 is going to perform the same as a 4890?

It makes no sense at all for them to make a 5850 with such performance.

Depends on the final spec for the memory type and interface and how much of an impact that has on the 5850 performance wise, it could be a little more.

I don't get how though, they'll effectively be shooting themselves in the foot.

A 20% speed increase between gens is atrocious.

Every gen since I got my 9800XT, there's been doubling of performance with each new gen.

Disregarding the jump between the 2900>3800s and 8800>9800s of course, which we can all agree don't really count as new gens anyway.

To me, this goes against every other new gen release we've seen in the last 5-6 years.

So until we see some real evidence, I don't get how this '20% faster than a 4870' is getting passed around as truth.
