Rate your driving ability

1) General awareness/anticipation

8/10. Pretty good. Riding a bike every day helps an awful lot, and still hearing the words from nearly 20 years ago from my Dad, saying "Look 3 cars ahead"

2) Parking ability

5/10. Poor. I park like a girl. I don't drive cars often enough now to keep in practice.

3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco?

7/10. Good - I have to ride the clutch a lot on the bike, and it helps when it comes to cars.

4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users?

7/10. I am not very patient. But I try very hard not to let any of my frustrations show towards another driver. I let buses out, and often let other drivers take priority.

5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code?

5/10. I had to read it again for my bike theory test this year - first time since I passed my car test nearly 20 years ago. Seriously, if anyone thinks they are more than 7/10 on this one, they're either a) an instructor or b) wrong.

6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions

7/10. Never lost it in the dry, but I'm not a rally driver.

7) " wet/icy conditions

5/10. Poor. On a bike, ok. Despite driving for nearly 20 years, ice still scares me.

8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape

6/10. Poor again, and also not too sure as I haven't been really out of shape on a public road.

1) General awareness/anticipation - 9, most of the time I try to keep an eye on what's happening ahead and behind, especially if there's traffic about - but sometimes drops down to 7ish if I know the route I'm going inside out and there's not much traffic about :(
2) Parking ability - 8, pretty confident with most spaces, though I've yet to go to a multi-storey car park.
3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? - 9/10, unless I'm in a hurry I'll take my time and slow down with plenty of time. Same for accelerating. Though I suspect it's smoother when driving, so this one might not be a fair rating for people..
4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users? 9, rarely do I get annoyed and I frequently let people in etc
5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? - 8, agree much of it's common sense
6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions - Umm.. no problems so far?
7) " wet/icy conditions - Hmm.. hardly high-speed, but there's a certain roundabout I kept losing traction on when wet for a while, never did figure out why - I guess that gives me a low score on this one :p
8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape - 7 maybe? Hardly an expert, but have coped once at 50-60 and 3-4 times on that blasted roundabout

1) General awareness/anticipation
7/10. Some Good days were I'm 10/10, some bad days when I'm lower. 7/10 seems about right.

2) Parking ability
7/10. Always dead center a space, always straight. Let down my my total lack of Parallel parking skills (don't do it often).

3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco?
7/10. If I'm on my own I'm 10/10, if I'm with my parents I'm jumping all over the place. High Anticipation often means i rarely have to brake at all. Brake pads are only half worn after 30k and 2 track days so doing well?

4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users?
6/10 Again, good and bad days. Often get Impatient with people, but generally always stay courteous even on bad days. Its often people being courteous to me on bad days that turn me around and make be believe in nice people again.

5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code?
5/10, I know what matters to me, not 100% on rest.

6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions
9/10. I believe I'm pretty good at this, like deliberately making car tail happy to get car to steer better etc.

7) High speed control of your car in wet/icy conditions
7/10 Not sure i can rate myself here. I rarely drive fast it wet and icy conditions because its not safe to do so. One thing i do know, Goodyear Eagle F1s make it a hell of a lot easier to control on wet roads.

8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape
8/10 Only ever done on track, going sideways at 80mph balance of opposite lock to stop it spinning, then reapplying power to bring it out of the drift. All good fun.

You know Fox, reading through the first page of this thread all I saw was *moan moan moan* from you.

But having a look again at my post on page 2, I completely agree with everything you said. I would no way rate myself as high this time round.

I never answered this thread the first time around...here goes!

1) General awareness/anticipation - 7 - I'd like to think that I've learnt a few lessons the hardway and my perception/awareness is pretty good.
2) Parking ability - 5 - I can park, but if I manage to pull off a parallel park I'm very "ZOMG!"
3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? - 5 - Sometimes I can be spot on, otherwise I'm throwing all small children around the car like they are on a rollarcoaster - This mainly depends on my "Can I be arsed to drive it smooth" or "Do I just want to get home"
4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users? - 5 - Can go either way very easily, depends on my mood :p
5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? - 3 - I know the basics, but thats it.
6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions - 6 - A year ago I would've easily been a 1337 in this one but now driving a car which is actually quick I've still got a lot to learn.
7) " wet/icy conditions - 6 - Just take it slower in the wet, main reminder is my tyres aren't amazing in the wet so its like "stay slow or die" :p
8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape - 7 - A couple of times the backend has gone and I've caught it, corrected it, and carried on unphased now :)

*awaits several lulz from everyone*

8-General awareness/anticipation
9-Parking ability (in fairness this is probs my best area, i scare people with my parking speeds, its partly down to the fact i have to drive in a very tight gate to my house and decent speed (its on a busy road) every day a few times, i also did my test in abergavenny which is frankly, driving hell (Narrrrrroowwww). and finally on my test i did a parallel park on a very tight street and since then i have acquired sick parking skills. tbh i think the most basic thing with parking is reverse in drive out.
7-Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco?
9-How patient and courteous are you to other road users?
8-What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? i gave my self a 8 because i did my test fairly recently (year and a half ago) and as a result my version if you like is more up date than 90% of drivers.
8-High speed control of your car in dry conditions surely if i drive like a **** 99% of the time and havent crashed that menas i deserve an 8 right?
8-wet/icy conditions

1) General awareness/anticipation - 9
2) Parking ability - 6 - because I suck at parallel parking.
3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? - 6 - I seldom drive smoothly. Usually because I'm in a hurry!
4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users? - 9 - very for both, especially learners.

  1. General awareness/anticipation
    7

  2. Parking ability
5 - Good at parallel parking but crap at reverse bay parking

  3. Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco?
    6 - Sometimes a bit harsh

  4. How patient and courteous are you to other road users?
    9 - very

  5. What is your knowledge of the Highway Code?
    7 - I've read the book

  6. High speed control of your car in dry conditions
7 - I've been on the motorway if that counts as "high speed"

  7. " wet/icy conditions
6 - ok in wet, but no experience with ice yet

  8. Your ability to correct your car when out of shape
    0 - what the?

1) General awareness/anticipation - 9 I'm fairly aware of surroundings
2) Parking ability - 8 Also good here
3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? - 7 Pretty alright with it
4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users? - 4 Urgh, don't get me started
5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? - 5
6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions - 7
7) " wet/icy conditions - 2 ****ing shocking in Icy conditions, I can't control my car at all even when going extremely slow. But then again my car does have bike tyres basically which doesn't help with grip.
8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape - Whut?

1) 8. Owing to riding a bike I would say this is pretty high, probably up to 9 when on 2 wheels.
2) 6. I can park if I put the effort in, but more often then not I look for the easy option.
3) 6. Though it depends on my mood and whether or not the passenger is into quick driving or wants a smooth ride.
4) 5. Patient towards people who make mistakes genuinely, extremely irritated with idiots who drive like lunatics.
5) 8. I'm sure I know the rules of the road pretty well.
6) 6. The car flatters me really.
7) 5. Once again the car flatters me but I've had a few hairy moments.
8) 5. Had the back end out many times, and high speed braking wobbles on 2 wheels and 4, as of yet to have an off or a crash (touch wood).

1) 8. I still feel my observation is good - I've been riding more this year than last and I've definitely picked up on my observation. I've never had a "oh crap - I didn't spot that" moment to date.
2) 6. Nothing's changed, but again if there's an easier way to park I'll do it, though the Alfa's turning circle is rubbish!
3) 6. Generally smooth again, but if I'm making progress I'll leave comfort behind. With passengers I tend to try and be smoother again I'd like to think that a ride with me is fairly comfortable.
4) 5. Patient towards people who make mistakes genuinely, extremely irritated with idiots who drive like lunatics. However I don't really suffer much (if at all) road rage anymore - I've chilled a lot.
5) 8. I don't think this has changed, I'm quite dull in terms of understanding the signs and rules of the road.
6) 6. I've changed car since and do push it, and whilst a lot of it is down to the suspension modifications, I feel confident in pushing it. However getting bent out of shape in a FWD car makes me more nervous than my RWD cars.
7) 5. Being caught out in the snow last year I was going to drop this to 1 because I had no chance in hell of driving, but otherwise for relatively normal use, again I think my score is pretty fair, whilst I'm not as comfortable as in the dry, and the car does understeer quite a lot, I feel confident I know the limits and can anticipate the driving conditions.
8) 5. Not really had out of shape moments on the FWD jalopy, had a few wobbles on the bike doing some high speed braking, but nothing out of my control. Again I think I have fairly decent understanding on how to control / recover a wobble, but by no means is it my "thing". If I purposely do it, then yes I can recover it, if it happens, whilst I have quick reactions, I couldn't guarantee catching it correctly.

Interesting thread :)

1) 9 - General awareness/anticipation - I am always aware of what's going on around me - usually evident when I notice things (like emergency services) before most other drivers
2) 9 - Parking ability - No issues here
3) 7 - Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? - Might be a little jerky if I'm driving a car for the first time but I can learn quick enough to be smooth/modulate, and smooth enough in familiar cars
4) 5 - How patient and courteous are you to other road users? - Improvement needed here. I get annoyed when someone does something stupid, but I am as courteous as possible if someone is looking to be given way to, and conditions are safe enough to allow this. I don't blindly let someone out without checking it's safe for them to move. Usually this works with number 1 - leaving enough gap in traffic to drive smoothly and not constantly be on the brakes, and thus leaving a gap that someone could nip in to if need be.
5) 6 - What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? - Highway what? ;) no, this could do with some improvement too I believe. I'm sure there's lots of little things I could be more aware of
6) 7 - High speed control of your car in dry conditions - Good I feel, but there's a lot still to be learnt
7) - " wet/icy conditions - High speed control, or just control? If the latter, I can always adapt to the conditions, so 8. If the former, then I don't really drive with the same vigour when it's wet so I don't know really!
8) 6 - Your ability to correct your car when out of shape - has been tested (non-deliberately, might I add) once or twice with 'successful' results. I don't allow myself to get cocky as a result however, because again I haven't done any skidpan courses or such, so wouldn't say I "know " anything really. A lot of it is just instinct?

1) General awareness/anticipation - 8
I have pre-empted a lot of potential crashes due to other road users being complete numpties. I always maintain the the idea that nobody else on the road can drive therefore treat them all with the equal level of distrust they deserve.

2) Parking ability - 6
I don't often have to park in any position other than head on into a bay, where I live does not involve much parking. I used to get a bit anxious when having to perform more advanced techniques but manage to get it done.

3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? 9
I'd honestly would like to say 10, but you'd have the internet warriors at the door.
In my car(and my car only), I have complete feeling/sensation/control of the clutch and brakes, I'm almost at one with the car. I'm very smooth when I need or want to be and it's like second nature. There's nothing skillful or hard about it, it's just a clutch and brakes, I'd be worried if you had issues after a year and still couldn't get used to it.

4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users? 5 (50/50)
Depends, I usually let people out a lot but if the road is clear ahead of me I usually won't because most people drive slower than the speed limit and hate being held up.

5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? I really don't know.. I'd say 8.
This is Jersey so, not much to know really :/ My UK code may be a bit off!

6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions - Don't know, I have never driven my car at high speeds whilst seeing how good I can keep control.
7) " wet/icy conditions - Same as above

8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape - 7

Only because I've rarely been out of control and when it has happened I've corrected it fine. My first time was driving in canada and doing a 90 degree turn onto an intersection and as I was about to straighten the car it kept going diagonally to the right(Ice, the only Ice I ever encountered driving there a week) but managed to control it without going into the other lane, stopped the back end kicking out near the end with some counter turning and easing off, not stopping the power. No use of brakes as it would have put the car out of balance.

Some people panic and put full anchors on and go all over the place.

[*]Parking ability
5 - Good at parallel parking but crap at reverse bay parking

This makes you a 1. Reverse bay parking is a basic manevouer, if you can't do it, you are poor at parking.

[*]High speed control of your car in dry conditions
7 - I've been on the motorway if that counts as "high speed"

Bwahahahahahahaha.

This thread truely is a comedy goldmine. I think it would be more accurate it everyone halved their scores :D

5 for them all, just like the vast majority of other people on here. Average in other words. Least I dare admit it!

With regard to no 7, Surely a good driver doesnt drive at high speed in snow/ice?

1) General awareness/anticipation = 9
2) Parking ability = 8
3) Brakes/Clutch control - nice and smooth or bucking bronco? = 7 (less now I dirve an Auto, but, because I drive an Auto, this should really be 10 :o)
4) How patient and courteous are you to other road users? =- 5
5) What is your knowledge of the Highway Code? = 7
6) High speed control of your car in dry conditions = 8/9
7) " wet/icy conditions = 7/8
8) Your ability to correct your car when out of shape = 9 but only if i've put it out of shape.
