Lights off at petrol stations?

Just had the most bizarre confrontation.

Pulled in to fill the car up at the same petrol station I often use. Stopped the car, turned the engine off, pulled the keys out, put them in my pocket, grabbed the pump, etc. No fuel. Odd. There was a muffled announcement which I assumed was a guy being told to put his phone away.

No fuel.

This carried on for 2-3 minutes with me wondernig if the pump was broken until a passing customer who had left the shop said to me 'turn your lights off, petrol station innit' as if I was completely stupid. My headlights were turned off but in the 'On' position so the parking lights - Angel Eyes - were turned on (No, I wasn't posing, the weather is filthy). I turned them off.

20-30 seconds later, the pump kicked into life.

I raised this with the woman at the checkout when I paid.

'Was there a problem with the pump?'
'No, I just wouldnt authorise you'
'Oh I see, was there an issue?'
'You had your lights on'
'Well it is very dark and wet outside...'
'If you have your lights on, you dont get fuel'
'Why not?'
'Company policy!!!!'
'That seems a bit bizarre?'
'Lights on means engine on and it means you might drive away without paying'
'How does lights on mean engine on? My engine was off and my keys were in my pocket!'
'Cant take the risk, company policy, always has been'
'I've been filling up here for years and never had that before. Besides, if I wanted to drive off my car will still drive off without its lights on you know'
'Its a risk!!!'
'Its 17:30, look at the traffic, I wouldnt make a very fast getaway would I, even with my lights on!'
'Dont get lippy, its an easy rule, no lights no fuel when we suspect drive offs!'

Going nowhere, I paid and left, utterly confused.

Has anyone else ever come across something so completely weird? What possible issue is there with having your sidelights on when filling up?

That's utterly bonkers. I leave my lights on when filling up all the time and have never had an issue! Jobsworths

Lol, I'd try filling up elsewhere. I once got asked to look into the CCTV camera when I filled up a couple of years ago for some reason.

Which garage was it? A mainstream one? I've filled up today with lights on and didn't (nor have i ever) get told to turn them off!

Only possible reason i could think is that glare could interfere with CCTV?

And I got stiffed 110.9p for 'Esso Super' or whatever the hell it was. I put a tenner in instead and in a really stuck up arrogant way told her it usually takes 80 quid, not entirely sure what i hoped to acheive by that but it made me feel better :p

Yeh what an idiot, my tddi had a dodgy starter motor, used to leave it running all the time
wow, that's rather unsafe.
the only time i've ever seen someone not turn off the engine was in moscow. it was february and around -15C, which is understandable i guess

don't fords need the key to open the fuel filler cap anyway?

LOL! Sounds like a catchphrase.
I'd be fuming if she said that to me. /keyboard warrior
