"Is it a PC or a laptop?"

PC = Personal Computer. Any computer which is operated by a single person? I think this is from the days when it took several people to run a main frame computer, running individual terminals.

The you had the Micro Computer such as the z80 processor based machines.

Now though, it has morphed into a computer running Windows for some reason. I guess to try to remove confusion with different brands of "PC".

I say:
Desktop/Workstation
Laptop

What's more annoying is when people call their desktop PCs their 'hard drive'. That can get confusing on the phone sometimes.

Tell me about it! I work in 1st-line support and I get this from time to time. The other misconception is when an end-user refers her wallpaper/background as the "screen saver". Another misconception is to "reboot" the PC when they really meant that they want to perform an OS reinstall.

"I'm a PC"

NO YOU FRIKKIN ARENT YOUR A PERSON GODAMIT A PC IS WOT YOU USE AND ALSO YOU MAC GUY YOU ARENT A MAC YOUR PC IS A MAC YES THATS RIGHT YOUR MAC IS A PC AS WELL

Yep, get these all the time. Also get some people asking to 'wipe' the PC, but they actually want an OS reinstall.

Another annoying thing to explain to people is viruses, spyware, adware etc, and how they're all different and that you need more than one program to prevent them. People seem to come in and have been sold an anti-virus (usually Norton from a large store) thinking it covers everything.

Still, I deviate, sorry.

Laptop
PC
Mac

I know "PC" is grammatically incorrect as technically any Mac or laptop is personal, but it would just confuse people.

It's easier to say PC hence why it's stuck :o

I always say notebook or desktop.

I.e. "that file is on my desktop."

Never PC and never laptop.

I also think people use the term Wi-Fi incorrectly based on it's original definition, though turns out it's easier to say than IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN. Philistines.

Pah this is nothing, you should hear my father trying to use "computer speak". He refers to printing as downloading which gets prety confusing...

Yeah, sometimes it's best to keep the computer speak to yourself, lots of people don't understand or get the wrong idea, especially when you're inserting three and a half inch floppies or burning cds.

.. but where does it stop?

"what did you do last night then?"
"upgraded my Random Access Memory :)"
"right?"
"yeah.. I'm up to 8 gigs now"
"ok.. so how's the wife?"
"i'm single"
"explains a lot"

hehehe I hate this game as well.

Right - here is where I stand on it

PC = Personal Computer - be it a Mac, be it running Linux, BeOS, Donkey Kong or a freaking pita bread - it is a PC - it sits on your desk and is a PERSONAL COMPUTER!!!!! muppets...

I agree with the hard drive thing as well - it's not a hard drive, it is not a CPU, it is a computer!!!! The hard drive holds your information, the CPU controlls the infomation, the computer contains everything else... Your computer is not the culmination of a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard - these are called peripherals - input and output devices.

The big box is a PERSONAL COMPUTER. The software that runs other software on the COMPUTER is referred to as an OPERATING SYSTEM or an OS. The OS runs on a COMPUTER not on a MAC or a LINUX BOX but on a COMPUTER.

Honestly why do people have to over complicate something that hasn't changed since the invention of the PERSONAL COMPUTER.

Why is a LAPTOP called a LAPTOP COMPUTER? Because it's portable and it can be used on... wait for it... your laptop!!!! ooooooohhhhh that one was a toughey wasn't it? But what if it's running Linux or OSX? Is it still a LAPTOP COMPUTER? Well does it sit on your laptop and is it a computer? Yes? Well no bonus points here cub scouts!!!

Your DESKTOP is the thing that your PERSONAL COMPUTER can sit on. It's a large flat thing that is generally level so that things don't fall off it. Your COMPUTER DESKTOP is a virtual GUI (GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE) version of the same thing. It too tends to be flat so that your programs and files don't fall off it.

Oh and all sarcasm aside - yeah WiFi is a trademarked name owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance for produces based around the IEEE 802.11 standard. So generally if people are talking about WiFi in terms of the wireless connections in their home or in Starbucks then they are generally correct.

I'm not going to lie, I use laptop for when a computer fits on my lap.

Interestingly, many people do not know the differences between Britain, Great Britain and the United Kingdom either, or alternatively, as previous threads have shown, refuse to accept the difference.

More importantly - who cares...
