Chelsea banned from signing players for 2 transfer windows

I've got a feeling it won't be reduced. As I said above, they have a suspended sentance from the Colegate affair, 2nd offence and UEFA's hate for English clubs won't help them.
If FIFA handed out the ban what has UEFA got to do with it? I'm sure UEFA are wetting themselves at the ban but this is all FIFA.

This better be in Fifa 10. ;)

Now that would be funny!

Honestly though FIFA are being stupid. Im sure that chelsea did do that but 2 windows is a lot and if they are going to do this they they should make it cover all teams. Im a man utd man but I would still admit that some of our practices are dubious on this front.

There are always going to be clubs that are more likely to temp a player away than others, we just need to make sure it is all above board. FIFA do hate english clubs however, they loved it when spain or italy dominated european football.

I think people are overestimating the impact this will have on Chelsea, they have arguably the best squad in the Premiership so all it means is that they will just not sell any players in the next two windows. They won't need to replace any players if none have left. Yes they have an old-ish squad but I don't think another year is going to kill many of them, the only loss I think will be Ballack who's contract runs out in the summer I believe. Even then, they have an embarrassment of riches in midfield, with Deco being a capable understudy.

The only weakness I suppose would be in terms of strikers when Drogba and Kalou are at the ACoN, that will put a lot of pressure on Anelka now that Shevchenko and Pizarro have left. An injury to him could spell trouble although it could also give Sturridge an opportunity.

People moan when the governing bodies do nothing in certain situations and then they moan when they do

I can only see that the punishments handed out to Chelsea both for what happened during their game with Barca and this and Arsenal/Eduardo good for football, forget that it's without precedent the precedent has now been set tough luck if you feel like you're being signed out it happened with us with Rio all those years back and we had to just get on with it so stop your moaning Chelsea/Arsenal

It's about time Fifa/Uefa started sorting out the ugly side of the game

The prescendant hasn't been set, Uefa have specifically said they WON'T be going after anymore people for diving. Which makes your point completely without merit, no prescendant has been made and should they make one and follow through, not setting it BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS, is beyond a joke.

Its a game, games need rules, rules can't change as and when you want, from the start to the finish of any single competition the rules need to be unchanged and uniformly enforced across the board.

The Eduardo ban is beyond a joke, especially considering the loudest complainers, players of Celtic, are divers, cheats and 2 should have been sent off for other forms of cheating in that same game as it was. If everyone who dived got a ban fine, but one, its ridiculous. What if Carragher got the ban he deserved for shirt pulling in the box, but not a single other player in the year was.

Likewise for Chelsea, every single transfer, almost every single transfer includes tapping up to some degree. The thing is I haven't seen what the kid supposedly did to breach his contract that allowed him to leave for free, unless he threw games or attacked other players I can't see why he shouldn't be allowed to leave. Contracts are just that, if you work for a publisher, as a secretary, you have a contract. Should you decide you don't wish to work there anymore its ludicrous to suggest you HAVE to work there until your contract is up.

Compensation should be agreed upon which, afaik, is exactly what happens in these cases for any other team.

EDIT:- ALso worth asking why people consider Chelsea to have the best squad in the league, far from it. Their first team wingers aren't great let alone the backup, they have literally 2 strikers, and as of this year a unproven Sturridge(though he's shown big potential), a bunch of central attacking midfielders, a bunch of centre backs, no established backup at left back, and a few right backs.

They have one of the most threadbare teams in the league tbh, even crap teams tend to have more players available to play upfront and on the wings.

When Drogba's gone, if Anelka is injured which two players are playing upfront, Sturridge and.... who? Upfront Arsenal and Spurs have massively stronger lineups than Pool, Utd or Chelsea. I'd say Spurs, Arsenal, Pool and Utd have stronger first team and reserve players on the wings too.

I really hope they tell Chelsea where to go when they appeal

Too many times FIFA have licked the rear of Chelsea and let them off, Drogba ban being one occasion

I'd take Chelsea's narrow formation featuring the likes of Lampard, Ballack, Essien, J.Cole, Deco etc over crap teams playing wingers any day of the week. A.Cole and Boswinga provide a bit of extra width, if they really need to switch things and play some wingers J.Cole can go on the wing, drop in the underrated Malouda, Zhirkov supposedly can play there (unknown to me right now), plus Kalou has plenty of experience playing out wide.

Looking at some of the Premiership alsorans I'm really struggling to see how they can do more damage playing wingers than Chelsea playing with a diamond or similar.

Heck even Barcelona the supercup champs aren't exactly overloaded with wingers, they don't need to be, a front six of say Henry, Messi, Ibrahimovic, Xavi, Iniesta and Toure is good enough to beat crap teams fielding wingers. A lack of wingers doesn't necessarily translate to a complete lack of width.

If Chelsea really wanted to try and reinvent themselves (not suggesting this is a good idea) they could even make A.Cole/Boswinga wingbacks, play Alex, Carvalho and Terry at Centrehalf, Essien/Lampard/Ballack in midfield and Drogba/Anelka up front or similar.

O well I guess we'll have to wait and see how the appeal goes...but if they decide to uphold it then we'll definitely have to give the youngsters more playing time.

I don't really see it meaning youngsters getting more playing time except for strikers, I mean realistically how many of them were there banging on the door before this ban was enforced? Unless they get some major injuries the kids will still be down the pecking order:

If Cech gets injured next year, they will just bring in Hilario
If a defender gets injured next year, they will just bring in Alex/Ivanovic/Belletti/Ferreira (Zhirkov for Cole)
If a midfielder gets injured next year, they will just bring in Deco/Malouda/Zhirkov/Mikel

John Terry, that's it.

To be fair though it's the same for most top English sides, if you are talking the players in my current first choice XI (with no injuries) who weren't bought from other clubs Man Utd have 1 (Brown), Arsenal have 0/1 (depending on whether you count the poached Fabregas), Liverpool have 2 (Carragher/Gerrard), Man City have 2 (Ireland/Richards), Spurs have 1 (King).

That's not to say some of the players bought from other clubs haven't been developed while youngsters of course.

+ Hutchinson & Mancienne, there are plenty on loan who will hopefully make it too.

Bloomin heck Don Hutchinson isn't he about 42 now  :D

Seriously I did not see this coming at all. Once again the issue of consistency comes into this. For years the Italian and Spanish teams have tapped players up. Hell even teams from the Championship and Div 1 will tap up players from a league below them. So if they are going to do this then it has to be fair and equal across the board and to all leagues not just the English ones.

As a Utd fan and if I were a Liverpool fan I would be very nervous. They have made an example of Arsenal and are doing the same to Chelsea. What dirt are they going to dig up on the other two of the top 4. Not to mention there veild threats on wanting to stop siddy spending their Oil Dollars.

I expect Chelsea will appeal and it will be reduced to a 1 window suspension.
