finally gave me 3 lovely red lights and hugging it hasn't worked.
Don't know what to do with it - send it to MS, or just buy a new elite.

What's the data transfer process?

Get the Elite, my launch 360 packed up with the 1st year I had it. Got it repaired by MS under warrenty then just before christmas I could see it was on its way out, so I sold it and brought the Elite.
Funny enough the 360 I sold to my mate did pack in 2 months ago, glad I got rid of it.
I think you can still get a transfer cable when you get the Elite to move from one HDD to another but Im sure if was for a limited time only.

If you can, you may as well go for the new hardware rather than a repair. The Jasper consoles are noticably cooler, but more importantly, consume less power.

At the very least call up and see how much the repair would cost. If it is less than £50 or something it would be worth it imo.
For RROD I would shout/haggle for a free repair anyway as it is hardly an unknown fault.

Worst comes to worse buy a new Arcade (Elite is waste of money imo) and stick your HDD on it and transfer your DLC licenses using the online transfer tool.

If you end up buying a new 360 with a HDD you will need to get a data transfer cable (free via post form MS) to transfer your data from your old 20GB (I assume) to your new 60gb or 120gb etc.

Why is an elite "A waste of money"?
Ideally I'd like to install most of my games on it.

If he gets his 360 repaired he could pick up a pre-owned 120gb for 48 pounds which is cheaper but with a newer Jasper Elite he'd have piece of mind that his new 360 is a better build quality. (Head pain time.)

Well you have all the accessories apart from the actual console so the Arcade is best value for him. Maybe then buy a cheap 60GB drive. You can install a lot of games on there. Personally I think 120Gb would be excessive for just games installs.

Depends on personal use, I’m sure the point of the MS releasing the Elite and 120GB was not only for better chipset cooling but for when people download HD movies as well as installing games.

yeah forgot about the movies thing, which i might partake in - haven't in the past due to space constaints of 20gb drive and it only having about 4 spare.

So did I get a jasper?

It has the 150w PSU (forgot to check on current draw.. hopefully it's 12.1A or something I'm looking for?)
Seems to have the quiet (benq?) dvd drive too, according to some photos I found.

Ethically speaking - what would a repaired/refurbed normal/old premium (20gb) be worth on the 2nd hand market?

I got a new elite for less than I paid for a 2nd hand launch day 20gb version (which was a few months old). I'm not sure if I should keep it as a spare or try and get something for it - albeit with no games, or rubbish games I don't want.

It was well out of 3 year warranty that I thought it would be covered by but the repair's not costing me anything from MS. Will there likely be any warranty after it's been repaired?

with sony there was a 3 month warranty but only to cover the same fault occuring again. I imagine microsoft would be similar.

Repair it yourself and get a new one. You can use the old one as a spare that way.

I've just fixed my first Xbox 360 RROD today, a launch core 360. The fix is fairly straight forward, get one of the kits of eBay and strip the console down. Put the motherboard in the oven at gas 9 for 5 minutes then perform the X-Clamp replacement :). When you place the motherboard in the oven make sure you cover everything except the CPU & GPU.

That is such an awesome set of sentences.

But to clarify will sunflower oil be ok, or should you use ground nut/olive oil ?

My console died for the 2nd time a couple of weeks ago :(.
Was looking at getting an Elite and transferring my stuff across, but if the only real difference between the Arcade and the Elite is the 120Gb drive, I'm better off saving money and getting an Arcade. Aren't I??
