Who hates the Union Flag?

I always thought the diagonal red lines represented Northern Ireland, am I wrong in thinking that?

The vertical / horizontal red lines on white background england and gurnsey, the diagonal red lines are jerseys and the blue and white bit is scotland. NI can also be the diagonals cos of their saint.

I don't see anything wrong with it, and imo the welsh flag looks a bit amateurish the dragon is too complex and or badly drawn half the time. Canadian flag is mega boring compared to the Union Jack.

I don't see what there is to hate about it. Furthermore I see more and more foreigners wearing clothing with the union jack on for some reason, Americans mainly. Check out Ellen Page wearing one in her new movie:

Can't be all that bad.

And on the topic of anthems, Rule Britannia all the way.

And as a matter of fact:

I can't say I think of all that much when I see the Union Flag, I certainly don't hate it for the design being tacky, my only minor issue is that a lot of nationalists seem to have appropriated it which is unfortunate as frequently their views are not mine and they do not speak for me, no matter how often they claim the mythical "silent majority" card for support. However that's a fairly unavoidable issue, certainly not worth worrying about too much.

Im not an Historain but i would think the Union flag along with the Tricolor and Stars and stripes are some of the oldest national flags?

Tacky ?? There is nothing tacky about it, and its probably the most world recognised flag ever.

Very distinctive.

I like it - instantly recognisable.

Besides, to all of those complaining at it being overused or used for the wrong reasons, look how tasteless the Americans are when stamping the stars and stripes onto everything and anything.

It could be worse guys....

Libya?..

I like the Union Jack, its unique! Argentina is probably one of my favourites, or japan.

I'm reasonably patriotic but I really dislike the design of our flag. Surely I am not alone in this? I almost feel embarrassed by it at international sporting events.

It's nothing to do with the unfortunate nationalistic associations it has picked up, I just find it really brash and tasteless. Why can't we have something interesting like the Welsh or Canadian flag? Or something iconic, simple and understated like the Japanese?

At least we don't have an unoriginal tricolour flag I guess.

I hate people who hate the flag. Be a patriot or move somewhere else.

What if you're never going to be patriotic? Where do you go to at that point? Is there a nation for those who hate patriotism? Maybe a bit like the sarcasm society, motto "like we need your support".

For what it matters I don't see anything wrong with a certain amount of patriotism but there are limits and I recognise that some people will never feel patriotic towards their country, either by the accident of birth or by adoption of that country through moving there they might not feel anything much towards it.

I'm quite fond of the union flag, it's a little more inventive than the individual nations' flags and quite a bit apart from the minor variations in stripe patterning that make up most of Europe. The nation itself may be in a state, but at least our flag's pretty.

I would hazzrd a guess the Union Jack is still one of the most recognisable flags in the world along with the stars and stripes.

Both flags share the fact they combine the flags of previous member constituents.

It is a fantastic design, and I have great pride when I see it.

As for it being chavvy, I just facepalmed at that. If the chavs are using the Union Jack over the St Georges Cross, then they at least they have pride in the whole of our great nation rather than certain areas of the country that "hate Britain".

The sooner those "States" get their own fiscal accountability the better ;)

I love the Union Jack - no other country has anything like it

I think the Union flag is terrific. It's distinctive, iconic, bold and concise. There's no reason to change it unless the Union breaks.

lol that's fair, but they're part of the commonwealth, and technically in a vey roundabout way, are part of UK, canada have a flag that has the Union Jack in it i'm sure, as they too are part of it

I do think we ought to incorporate some part of Wales in the flag as well. Maybe the Welsh dragon in the centre as has been proposed.

I see no reason why we shouldn't seek to incoporate all member states in the flag and the change would be sufficiently simple as to no spoil the overal look, albeit with less simplicity of design.

I didn't think Wales was/is a member state due to it being conquered over 800 years ago by the English. It didn't have much of a choice.
