well i promised my mum (so it was my own decision, she dosent have to sign any forms now) i would wait untill i was 18 to start things rolling again and ive just started training again ive got a fitness day with the army on the 22nd i need to get my run time nailed down. Im looking for the folowing if someone would care to help me:

1: a diet i can go on that will make me be able to slim abit more fat off, give my body energy for running and help me build muscle.

2: a fitness plan for my running that will be the most effective in getting my 1.5 mile runtime down (first time ive ran 1.5 mile in about 1 and a half months today i was knackerd so i did it in 13 mins) i dont mind running further distances if its going to benefit me.

3: any other fitness tips. after getting advice here i carried on doing my pullups for a while i can do about 7 - 9 now also situp tips would be apriciated.

thanks

1: When you go to the supermarket to buy for the week, buy: meat, fish - fruit, veg - milk, natural set yogurt - oats
And nowt else.

2: try doing 100m "balls to the wall" sprints, with a 15 second rest between each sprint, do that for 10 minutes initially, then work up to 20 minutes. 1.5 miles is no distance at all so I think you'd be better working on these sprints rather than going on longer endurance runs.

I wouldnt bother with a diet, you eat pure grub there mostly anyway, you dont need to be mega fit, it helps ofcourse though, but i like to have a bit of meat to work with once i start training.

With your running, just run 2miles 4-5 days a week, with a half a mile walk/jog to warm up.
If you want to train properly for your 1.5mile and time it, Gentle jog for Half a mile, then Quickly start your stopwatch and run 1.5miles. because thats what it will be once your there.

Your pull ups are fine, aslong as you can lift yourself up, 4 or 5 pullups are fine.

Is this selection your going to ? you just said Fitness day...

nah not selection just a fitness day. i had a date for selection when i was fit enough but my mum made me cancel it untill i was 18 since she said it would make her upset etc since she had to sign a lot of the forms when i was 17

Parents should keep there noes out :), its your life, your career, and what you want to do, and parents over exagerate when they hear the word "Army"

im not sure what a fitness day is , never heard of one, all i say is dont over do yourself, 5 pull ups is fine for selection once you get there, but if you go to your army recuitment centre and you say you have a time of anything above 11minutes they wont allow you too go to selection, if the recuitment officer lets you go and you fail, its on there head then, so they make sure you have a good margin so they are pretty certain you will pass.

what do you want to do in the army ?

respect your mum, try a different career path? or are you dead set on the army?

Doesn't work like that though where some parents are concerned. I was adamant I was joining at 16 and had a PRC date set with the RM, but my mum found out they served in Northern Ireland and point blank refused to sign me up for the British Army or Royal Marines, I joined the Royal Navy instead.

Just wondering why it has to be the army? Have all other careers been explored?

he hasnt asked about career's, the army isnt exactly a "Last resort"

Wonder why some people treat it as a last resort, like what you just said "have all other career's been explored", would you say that if you worked anywhere else ? nope, my mindset was on the army 4 months after i left school, and now its been about 3 years and i start this year, i didnt look at many other career paths because thats what i wanted to do instantly.

How harsh it may seem, parents do get concerned, but that shouldnt stop you doing what you want to do, and again it may seem harsh, parents should respect that.

i agree that 16 is debatable, and thats why you have to have your parents consent, but still, i think your parents should respect the decision, your not allowd to get sent away untill your 18 anyway afaik

parents dont understand that by the time you have applied, done selection, started training, finished training it would have passed nearlly 2 years, hell its taken me neally 3 just to get into basic.

the intakes have stopped untill next year anyway, there is so much **** that can pop up and hold you down, do not think that you sign a few papers and your in, its a long long process. like i said its taken me neally 3 years, so my advice is to get it all done and ready so your in there books again.

How come it's taken 3years? Medical?

I went to a fitness day last week,

Basically it's ADSC light edition.. A day of 1.5mile run, press ups, sit ups, pull ups, team tasks and icebreaker session... and gerry can run.

Nothing too over the top.

It's the pullups which is the hardest bit.

Medical held me back, anything can pop up in your medical, anything that makes them read twice, they can catch you up on it, i was allso put on a 2 weeks trial by my selection officer so he could track my run times.

and pull ups like i said anything above 4 or 5 is acceptable, its your determination more than anything, your not doing selection and then being deployed, basic training is there for you to get fit, aslong as they see your putting 120% into it they know your going to give 120% in basic training, and then your fitness will shoot up.

the bottom line is if you really want it, you will exceed your expectations on the day, i beat my pb by 30 seconds on the day in the 1.5mile, nothing is going to kill you at the end of the day, if you want it, you will get it.

Yeh, I got a 1st interview next week... My med forms cleared, but I'm hoping once I get up to selection the medical i do there doesnt show anything up...

It shouldnt, my medical history is pretty much non existent.. but you never know...

Seems like heart murmurs are the main cause of rejection... which is mostly cleared but still annoying.

Fingers crossed, toes crossed, touching a lot of wood :)

What you all going in for?

im in for the infantry,

i had asthma when i was young, gromits, ive had quite a big history with my ears, i have 2 6inch screws in my ankle, ive had 2 operations in the last 3 years so i could be accepted, ive aplied 3 times and been defered 3 times, finally when the day came and they sent me the letter im going to selection i was over the moon,

then when they day came where i was at selection, the medical tests are huge taken about 3-4 hours, i was convinced something would pop up, but i breezed through, and it was the best day of my life so far for him to say "you have passed", to go through all of that and pass :)

there were only 2 of us that had asthma when we were young, and we had to do this extra test, all i can say is good luck if you used to have asthma :p, its a painfull test, riding on a bike for 20minutes breathing in pure oxygen, while they increase the pressure in the bike so its harder to peddle, jesus it was tough, if you fail that test you would NEVER be allowed to apply again. so i had the biggest turtles head in history while doing that.

Holy heck...

That is some history.

Well luckily I've never had asthma and won't mysteriously get it any time soon :p

I had grommits as a proper young kid.

Last 2 month I went to the doctors for the first time in 15years. For a ear wax clean :p

your right, especially given the fact you hear on the news nearly everyday some 18-24 yr old has been killed, they have there doubts as expected.

if you dont like your parents telling you what to do, you have no chance in the army mate ;)

who said anything about not liking your parents telling you what to do ?, im nearly 20 mate, i think im old enough to do what i wish.

i said parents should not have a say in your career, and if you dont agree with that your a fool.
