Guitar Hero vs the Guitar

To be honest, we probably agree - my first post was trying to say that if someone's not interested in learning an instrument anyway, what's the game going to do? If you've been encouraged from an early age to learn/have an interest you'd learn regarless of the "instant gratification" you get from the game.

I was just responding to the sarcastic reply to a comment I wasn't intending to be serious ;)

I stopped playing GTA4 and started mugging and carjacking in real life... far more fulfilling!

I guess Wyman and Mason have a point in that article, that if kids spent as much time practising the real guitar as they do playing GH/RB then they would probably be pretty damn good by now BUT I think they're missing the point that in them first couple of years of learning and practising the rewards are quite hard to achieve (I'm talking about being able to play songs you like, sounding like some of your favourite artists) which IMO puts people off.

This is where the appeal for GH/RB comes in as you can play your favourite songs (if they're in said game) pretty easily straight though with little to no practise. And let's not forget that playing these games on hard and expert offer a quite a challange even for guitarists that have speed and dexterity in their hands/fingers! - though one might argue that its un-natural and that pushing buttons isnt the same as holding down strings and so they're at a disadvantage...

I honestly believe that playing these games has improved my own speed and dexterity while playing the guitar but they certainly haven't made me think "oh well GH is easier, I'm just going to play that and forget about my actual guitars"

I do rememeber there was someone on here a while ago that said they would'nt ever bother with these games because he/she could allready play the guitar (or maybe drums! lol) which tbh I think is a bit of a stuck up attitude, but each to their own i guess

Completely agreed with Skyfall and cokecan72 by the way...

Just had a thought - wouldn't the cost of learning the guitar be waaaay more than Guitar Hero if you weren't self taught anyway? Lessons are £20 a pop around my way... (Hence why I'm trying to learn solo...)

It is just the same as people being good at any game, I don't play guitar hero because I am too lazy to play real guitar, I just enjoy the game,

It is all just pressing the right buttons at the right time, which a lot of people enjoy

Also, maybe, just maybe, some GH players (myself included) don't actually want to learn the guitar...

Some songs are actually harder on Guitar Hero than on a real guitar. :o

Drums are the closest to the real thing, far more challenging than the guitar portion of the games.

I really don't like the guitar as an instrument, I've tried numerous times but everything about it feels uncomfortable to me. I'm a musician at heart, I play the violin, viola and flute and love them, so it's not that I just can't connect with an instrument.

That said, I enjoy playing guitar hero. It's very different to actually playing a guitar and I don't have to contort my small hands to play something complicated. As far as I'm concerned, it's just another rhythm game that happens to have a guitar shaped controller.

Truth.

I have stopped playing the guitar parts of guitar hero and rock band and only focus on drums now.

The thing about the guitar parts is that often it's not that close to how it actually plays on a real guitar, plus quite often I find they overchart some of the stuff making it harder than on a real guitar!

Drums are quite decent though, you have less things to hit but in general it's quite accurate and is a great stepping stone to help you play real drums.

Obviously it's incorrect as it uses a normal pad for a cymbal, but that wouldn't be too hard to adjust to on real drums, at least you get used to the footwork by playing the games. (the orange line is the bass pedal indicator)

This video shows how the game matches Run to the Hills on real drums, quite good.

Why do people get so offended with guitar hero players anyway?

It seems there is one of these threads every month, If you like playing guitar then go do that,

You don't see football players moaning about people playing fifa, why such hate towards guitar hero?

this cartoon clip is basically how I feel about the game

I have no problem with the Guitar Hero/Rockband games as if it gets more people interested in music and may be a few of those learning an instrument then great.
Personally I haven't played the games so I can't offer an opinion on whether there's anything more than just a rhythm game underneath it all (press these buttons at the right time), but it does seem as though it offers almost no scope for creativity - embellishment means a lower score.
I've been playing music in orchestras and singing in amateur bands since I was 9 and the biggest joy I get from it is the possibility every now and then of exercising a bit of creativity, even if doing a cover version you can do it in your own way and this is what these games are missing.

A bit of a ramble I know but essentially I don't think Guitar Hero can be considered 'musical' as such, but if kids are enthusiastic about it then take the opportunity to plonk a real guitar in their hands and get them making real music whilst that young enthusiasm still exists.

I only started playing Rock Band because I didn't want to pay for drum lessons or buy a real kit because of costs, I figured that if I could get used to the foot pedal work and improve my stamina by going to the gym and playing Rock Band at home I could move onto real drums after a while if I really enjoy it.

It's helping but to be honest my coordination with my foot is awful, improving but still, it is way harder than it looks.

Well actually it's not the only reason I started playing, some friends play it too and we go to local bar nights where they have the game out for fun and get free shots if playing as a band. Always a laugh when there's 4 people playing at once.

I figured it would be nice to have my own kit at home to get some practice in on, hopefully in a few months I'll be playing the game on expert to a good standard and maybe in a year I'll get a real drum set.

The Rock Band 2 drum trainer is a good place to learn. You get to recognise the different drum beats and it's just a case of applying those drum beats you learn to the real drums.

Seen that! Looks really good, will have Rock Band 2 tomorrow friends bringing it round to play some, getting my own copy later this week.

Some things are just a bit of fun to someone. I've got no musical talent whatsoever but i can press a green button as a visual prompt comes up and it's fun.

I'm sure there are aspects of GH which can apply to the Guitar.
