New Sky HD EPG

Just got SkyHD hooked up today. On the Amstrad box, must say the quality difference on the HD channels is unbelievable :|! I didn't think it would be as good as it has turned out to be. Especially some of the more modern films.

In 2 minds whether to force the update of the new EPG though? Also, does anyone know how to get rid of the forced 4:3 ratio on some programmes?

The Amstrad doesn't have the new EPG yet, so forcing the update will probably do nothing or update the older EPG to a newer version of the old one (if that makes sense :)).

Also the "forced" 4:3 is meant to be there because thats how the programme is meant to be viewed. When watching 4:3 shows on HD channels, it needs to make the whole picture 16:9, since thats what HD is broadcast in, so it puts in those black bars down the left and right. Its much better viewing it like that because it was how it was originally intended and it should look better than its stretch-o-vision counterpart.

When i first got HD installed and watched the Simpsons on Sky1 HD, i thought it was rubbish. But now that im use to it, it looks so much better than that shown on the SD Sky1 channel.

Ah thanks for that :). Any eta on when the new EPG is scheduled for the Amstrad box?

No idea tbh. The new EPG isn't out for the Samsung's yet, so they all need to be done first before the Amstrads, so it could be awhile.

Sky must have delayed it for some reason, cause the rolled it out to the Pace owners pretty quickly, unlike the Thomsons which had weeks between each version of the box.

Ah fair enough, I seem to remember a technical support guy saying the end of the month to me. But that could just be rubbish. I wonder why they roll it out on each box first, and how each box gets priority over the others

Well before they started it, they said people who had Sky HD the longest (meaning subscribed since like the beginning) would get it first, but really it just rolled out in order of the box make. Thomsons were the first ever Sky HD boxes, so i guess Sky thought that if people had that make of box, then they must have had it for awhile.

So it didn't really mean those who have had HD the longest get it, just those with older boxes get it first. I have a Pace and only got HD this year, so i have the new EPG, whereas people who have had Samsungs and Amstrads for longer dont.

I got an on screen message last night that said that a new card was on it's way to me so maybe they are about to start doing the Samsungs now.

Not sure the card is much of an indication. I've had the new EPG since April/May, and I still haven't had a new card.

Don't think that the new cards have anything to do with when the roll out will start happening tbh. I have a Samsung HD box and got my new card near the end of May IIRC.

The card has nothing to do with the firmware, I have had the new card for a while now and my amstrad is still on the original EPG. :)

If you've got a Samsung or Amstrad box then, make sure you try and do a before and after HD picture quality check if you can. I suggest recording something now on a good HD channel, watching it closely a few times and keep it saved. When you get the EPG update have a look at it again and see if you can notice any difference. What you will be looking for is a slightly less sharp picture on HD channels. It was suggested on another forum that this large delay between the Thompson/Pace EPG update was because they were fixing this before sending it out to Samsung/Amstrad, so hopefully you won't see any picture difference and then maybe us with Thompson/Pace will get a second update later.

Quicker than before?! Sounds like they've been doing something with it during the delay, mine is way slower than the old EPG.
