Ive done the train prices thread, now for the bus prices one.

Why is a day rider ticket £4 but a single is £1.70? Most people go into town then come home, not ride the bus all day! I know (and people on here probably will) that im not the best at maths in the world but I can work outs its cheaper to get 2 singles

You do realize that most of the time (in London) if you want to get anywhere you need to take at least 2 buses or even more.

...but most other places one is enough. Dont think you can even get a return can you? Ill ask tomorrow but never seen it on the 'menu'

Instead of getting two singles how about getting a return ticket?

i dont think all bus companys do them

stagecoach definetly dont

but anyway unless people are going to or from a town centre then they usually need to get more than 1 bus. thats what the day rider type tickets or for

buses are still far far too expensive though. costs me 2quid to go 1.5mile down a straight road. bus is always rammed full to so its not like theyre trying to make back costs!

If £2 is too much to go 1.5 miles, why not just walk it?

i do or ride

was just an example of how much of a rip off they are. mums taking kids to school etc have gotta pay that every day

Because they want people who take a single bus each to pay full price, but want to give incentives to people who would have to take multiple buses.

I, for example, would have to take 2 buses to get to my work. No way am I doing that because it is cheaper to drive than it is to get 2 return tickets. Buses would take much more travel time, and waiting for buses could add 60 minutes waiting time each day.

Why would I turn a 60 - 90 minute daily commute into 120-150 minutes unless there was an incentive?

Exactly.

I use the bus very infrequently, however when I do I always find them good value. For example getting from Victoria station to Kings cross at 2am in the morning last week, taxi would have cost £16, bus on the other hand £2. I also took a bus to and from Dartmoor (from Plymouth) which is about an hour each way, for around £4.50.

From what I can see bus companies have simplified their fares, so there are only 3-4 options, singles, returns and day riders, and they all seem to be cheap, unless of course you ride a bus for 1.5 miles. It makes far more sense than having 50 different fares for different locations, ranging from 30p to £20 and is most likely to be cheaper for the majority of people (as most people ride to/from a town centre or to another town)...

No return bus tickets in London I'm afraid and if you pay by cash I think it cost double that when using an Oyster card (pre paid card).

The 'weekly green zone rider' is good at £10. As many bus rides as you like in the main leeds zone. But the price of singles is stupid at £1.70. Should be £1

There is a bus sometimes that charges 50p into town, first should do the same

By car -
It would cast minimum £2 a day to park in Leeds then i would need to walk a mile too. This is a special work car park. Then theres fuel, insurance etc on top. £10 for a week on the bus is good, £1.70 for a single is a bit heavy for 1.5 miles

In Leicester, a day pass (for buses near ish the city center) is £3.60
A single, from my house in to the city center is £2.00

You save all of 40p getting a pass, which everyone does.
I still remember (going back ... 4/5 years) it was 55p in to the city center, and a day pass was £2.50 and let you go anywhere on the Arriva buses, funnily enough a week pass was £5.00

I know it's kinda off topic a bit, but it just bugs me that every month the bus goes up 20p. Only a little thing, but still.

Worryingly true, same in Bath

It cost me around £3 to get a single from Bristol Temple mead train station to Saltford, which was about 40 minutes on the bus. I doubt that would be cheaper by taxi!

In Plymouth in fact it normally cost around £4.20 to go about a mile. Busses are cheap compared to taxis.

Also, not everyone can afford to own or run a car, so while you may have the option to take your car because it costs you the same (in the long run it doesn't though) for many people the bus is the only option, or walk.
