Guitar Hero vs the Guitar

no it doesnt teach you anything apart from how to tap along to a song, it shows you how to hold drumsticks and use a bass pedal properly? funniest thing i have heard.

Jesus, i was trying to debate maturely but tbh now i agree with the others, your head is stuck right up your arse. Basics are basics, some people don't know how to hold drum sticks, some people don't even know what the hell a bass pedal is, in the tutorial segment of the game it outlines those basics for those that don't have a clue. Step back, think about the definition of the term 'basics' and then look at what the elements i've described that you find oh so funny are, they are the basics.

the basics of drumming are learning your way around a kit, the different aspects of a kit, the parts of a kit, the different sounds you generate from certain parts.

how to hold sticks for different styles, how to PROPERLY hold sticks, how to position yourself on a kit without damaging your back, how to adjust yourself to the kit.

how you apply yourself to bass pedal and hihat pedal depending on style, again.

if the game teaches this then fairplay.

Forget the heel down, heel up nonsense, will you sit down and shut up? You've totally taken over this thread with your arrogance.

forget it? nonsense? this is why people who play drums on a game, are blind to the real thing.

I think you need to learn the definition of the word basics. Put it this way, if you were teaching a kid how to play the drums for the first time, the very first moment they picked up the drum sticks would you say 'ok right these are the different ways to hold the drumsticks for each style of drumming', would you even expect them to use the hihat straight away?

If so i imagine you'd alienate the kid instantly.

does it teach you heel down? heel up? no.

Your now mistaking "Basics" and "Basics", hard I know without context.

Basics: Where to put your hands and feet and what stuff does, learn how to hold a simply rythem.

The equivalent and being able to hold a guitar right, i.e not hold the neck like a baseball bat and learning how to pick each string up and down.

Basics: what you jsut said about your heal or maybe how to use the snare properly.

The equivalent of being able to play a cord or two, or palm mute.

I think they're referring more to the locomotive basics (i.e. it might get you more used to coordinating your hands and feet in such a manner) rather than technical basics. Chances are though it'd just get you into bad habits if you went in with that mindset, though.

of course i would, and its how most people who go to drum teachers are taught, you can seriously effect the way you play, and of course get bad technique from holding the sticks wrong. it would only benefit them.

So before you've even taught them what the basic elements of a drum kit are, the bass pedal, the hihat etc etc, you'd explain the many subtle ways to hold a drumstick? Again i feel you've become blinkered to what the real basics of playing the drums really are, many people who start learning won't even know what the basic components of a drum kit even are for.

this guy summed it up, im trying to get across what this guy has said, that you fall into bad habits from not being taught the correct way, anybody who wants to move to the real thing needs to be taught the correct way.

no i never said that, before we moved onto basics part 2 :D id show them around the kit, identify the parts, sections, and then show them the correct way of position there hands and feet , and stick posture, and grip.

See i agree with you there, those are some of the basics, and the tutorial section in rock band does indeed show you what the bass pedal is, what its purpose is, how to hold the stick, things such as letting it 'bounce' back off the drum instead of whacking it. The very most basics of the basics. As i said previously, it's not exactly a crash course for becoming a rock god, but it does at least teach you some of the most simple parts of drumming, however trivial.

So they learn to hold the sticks wrong, what if they also learn how to hold a rythem using the bass a symbol and a drum, is holding the sticks correctly then going to make them go wide eyed and say "Bwah?".

If you put a bass pedal and 2 boxes and the right hights in front of someone and show them how to hold the sticks right, and then teach them how to play a basic rythem, if you then replace them with the correct drums, will they be unable to play that rythem?

see thats a step in the right direction, but what also im trying to say is there is so many different ways to drumming, its impossible to get it all across in a game, and of course let the guys who play have fun! but if you want to do the real thing, id suggest going to a teacher, because it will be so different to the game :)

I've never claimed it's even close to a proper drumming lesson, all i'm trying to argue is that it does teach you some of the low level basics, something you previously claimed wasn't true.

So what should we do if we see a child knocking out a beat on some plastic tubs? Punt them out the door?

Burn them

Burn them

but there is many basics, theres basics of a kit and basics of drumming, thats my argument :)
