District 9 review...it's looking good... **SPOILERS**

It just makes it more understandable to me if they didn't like a film for valid/logical reasons and not the retarded questionings of an assumed narcoleptic moron.

Wow, where did you buy a horse with such long legs? Looks more like a giraffe to me though mate, you may have been ripped off.

I didn't know much about this film before seeing it last night, watched one trailer which didn't give much away, so went in not knowing what to expect. But this turned out to be a good thing, what a film it was. I expected none of it and enjoyed a completely different perspective on the whole alien genre. The mech suit scene was fantastic, done better than any other film I've seen and made better by the fact he didn't have a clue how to work it at first. This was a whole new take on the hero character as well. This was your standard office worker, who I didn't take to at first, but like others in this thread have said, you didn't feel for him until he was basically dying fighting. There was enough of everything in it to make a perfectly balanced film, action, suspense, drama and a little bit of humour thrown in. Definitely one of my favourite films of this year.

If he paid for a horse and got a giraffe, I'd say he's well ahead of the game!

Well my point was I think he was being a bit harsh. It was only on my second viewing of the film that I picked up the single sentence "they seem to have lost all their upper leadership, we assume to some sort of illness" - or words to that effect. If you blinked you'd miss it and miss a very important part of the jigsaw puzzle which makes the film make sense, and I can think of another couple of similar parts in the film, which were very key to the story, but which were rushed over and didn't give you much time to digest it.

This doesn't make people idiots.

 That is how they speak in south africa.

When he was swearing he sounded more like a scouser than a South African.

Just didn't sound right to me... not that it particularly detracted from the film, which I really enjoyed.

The average Brit has never even heard a South African accent, and yet it's surprising the number of people who believe they're in a position to pass judgement.

When they say "That doesn't sound like a South African accent", what they usually mean is "That doesn't sound like what I've always imagined a South African accent to be."

Lethal Weapon 2 springs to mind. :p

Slightly pedantic Evangelion, Id have thought that obvious.

Sounds like some people would have been more comfortable with a copy/pasted muscle man hero type main character, preferably American? :D

It's not like we don't have enough of those already.

It also seems to me that a lot of people are very easily pleased.:p

Each to their own in the end and give me a good thriller any day of the week.

Went to see this today, loved the south african accents

But the film itself, the first ~40 mins were good, i liked the new take on alien landing type films, but then i felt it just turned into a pretty standard formula filling film. As I was watching i just felt i could be watching any other typical film from the last 10 years.

Dissapointing really after such a good start.

So would I, but that's people for you. Everything needs to be spelled out for them. :)

I've worked with Afrikaaners, so I know what they sound like. It's not a pretty accent, but I was nevertheless pleased to hear it in District 9 because it helps to remind everyone that there are other countries outside America where interesting stuff does actually happen.

Just been to see it and thought it was great.....but!

What were they doing coming to Earth in the first place without enough fuel to get home? Or did that thing that fell off the ship really screw up their ship so much that they couldn't even open the doors?

1. Apparently, the ship was programmed to find the nearest life sustaining planet.

2. They did have fuel. The command module that fell, however, did not.
