Depends what you're after out of the car. What year is it? I would prefer an older one with one of the diesel engines.

^^ this.
spend less on a better car, spend more on insurance

i wouldn't spend £12k on a 116i. for that much it'd have to be much more powerful
and the smoker's pack would lead me to suggest that it stinks of fags

im currently driving a 1.4 VW polo. i think 1.6 enough for me?

1) the polo is a lot lighter, so the 1.6 will probably feel slower.
2) why are you after a car with great driving dynamics, only to hinder it with a crappy powerplant? If you are at all interested in the 1 series for any other reason than the badge, you'll want the power to go with the drivetrain and chassis.
3) are you going to get a 1.8 after your bored of the 1.6, then maybe a 2.0 in a few more years? There are no rules regarding engine size increases.

Allow me,

The car in that link is extremely old, it also happens to be a 120.
I happen to be looking for a 116 or 118.

Are you purposefully trolling? You know full well he was referring to the fact that the car is neither "old", nor should it come with the 1.6 or 1.8 engine, when other, faster, larger engined examples are available for the budget.

Isn't the 116i a restricted 2.0i these days anyway? Not that that's any excuse for buying a 116i.

Honest don't make the mistake of buying an under powered car. Once you buy a decent car you wont go back to underpowered ones.

Well.

For a start a Polo is a smaller, lighter car so you cant compare engine sizes directly - what is it with young drivers and being obsessed by engine size alone?

I think the fact you're concerned with insurance on a fairly mundane BMW and dont understand that there's more than one contributing factor to performance than engine capacity, I'm guessing you're quite young? Probably too young to be sensibly considering a 12k car?

Sell the polo, buy a Golf or similar for 3~4k - put the rest in savings and buy a more expensive car when youre old/experienced enough to understand and appreciate it
