Just ploughed my way through Series 1 & 2 of Spaced (yes, I know i'm about 10 years too late, but I only just got my hands on it) and enjoyed it... but with some reservations.

Series 1 was sheer epic win... the acting was hilarious, the dialogue hit you like a sledge-nammer, and the surreal sequences gelled so perfectly with the rest of it that you almost didn't notice them (if that makes any sense).I didn't feel any part of it was weak, and I had genuine lol moments in every episoide thanks to some simply mind-blowing scenes. In fact I couldn't wait to start S2...

Series 2... I just don't know... something was definately missing. It felt much more forced than than S2, the gags not as funny... the surreal sequences lacked invention and randomness, and definately suffered as a result. Don't get me wrong, it was still decent by general comedy sit-com standards, but I can't help but feel that it lacked she sheer genius of S1.

Thoughts?

Completely agree with you. Although season 2 still has its moments, it definitely is missing something. Season 1 is absolutely fantastic and makes it one of my favourite shows.

It's missing many years of material collection, gestation, revision and rewriting.

"We've got a second series? Brilliant! Fantastic! Oh hang on, we have to write it now, don't we? Ummm.... [FX: clock ticking]... let's have another look at all the ideas we rejected for the first series..."

Overall, it was still a great comedy programme, with so many memorable scenes.

Very under-rated show IMHO. Definitely agree re. season 2; can't put my finger on it, though.

I loved the Bill Bailey cameos; they should have had more! :D

Bilbo Bagshot: I was like you once. Blonde hair. Scraggly little beard. Childlike ears. Full of beans, and *****. I let my principles get in the way of things. I once punched a bloke out once for saying Hawk the Slayer was rubbish.

Tim: Good for you.

Bilbo Bagshot: Yeah, thanks. But that's not the point, Tim. The point is I was defending the fantasy genre with terminal intensity, when what I should have said was "Dad, you're right - but let's give Krull a try, and we'll discuss it later.

I love this show :D

I found series 2 just as good as series 1. Invisible shootout with the Bluetones backing track is superb. :D "Clever boys..."

What what?! Season 2 is better than the first! It's tighter and the jokes are better.

Admittedly it lost some of it's niche appeal but there are a lot, and I mean A LOT of references back to Season 1 in it too.

The gun fight is the best thing by a mile. As is Brians installation.

Announcer: The first rule of robot club is... you do not talk about robot club. The second rule of robot club is... YOU DO NOT talk about... wait I've got that wrong... [Pulls out piece of paper] The second rule is, no smoking.
Tim: Why aren't you allowed to smoke?
Mike: Shhh! You're not supposed to talk about it!

How can you not like series 2? Both are awesome. My favourite sitcom ever.

The commentary on the DVDs is pretty good too. As is the documentary on the third disc of the collector's edition.

Daisy: Do you rent downstairs?
Brian: D'you mean am I gay?
Daisy: What?
Brian: D'you mean am I gay?
Daisy: No, I meant "are you renting the downstairs flat?"
Brian: Oh, right. Yep, sort of.
Tim: Are you gay?
Brian: What?
Tim: Are you gay?
Brian: [Thoughtfully] No.

I liked the second series just as much as the first, it's all brilliant. For me no other sitcom comes close to Spaced :)

One of my All time fave comedies, always watch it over and it never gets old.

Oi oi! You lucky people! :D

I dont know what you mean Season 2 isn't as good, I thought it is still full of epic win. You'll find yourself finding new things everytime you watch it.

Loved both those series and cant fault any episode, being at uni at the time I did relate very well to Tim's life style and choices :)

What was the character who loves clubbing?

I'm trying to find a YouTube clip of the episode where he is round Tim's place and it dancing to the Kettle boiling and Phone rining...
