Ouch, you think its justifiable self defence?

Detectives are still interviewing a John Hopkins University student who fatally lacerated the upper body of a man breaking into his off-campus residence overnight. The suspect also suffered a nearly-severed hand, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The house is home to four undergrads who had already had a Sony PlayStation and two laptops stolen earlier on Monday.
And when one of the students heard noises at about 1am, he went to downstairs to investigate armed with the sword. He saw that the side door to their garage had been pried open, and inside, was lunged at by the suspect.

hmm...

yes.

anyone lunges at me in my own house (or 'home') and id give em something back. if i had a spoon in my hand it hit them with a spoon, if it was a bat, id use a bad, if i had a sword, bad luck to the intruder.

totally justifiable

i once chased a would be burgler down my street in my boxers with my samuri sword.

When i got back the police suggested that it might be a good idea that i return it back to my room before he sspotted it officially.

LOL

Same here, some burglar lunges at me in my own home and he's getting hit hard with whatever I have to hand, be that a feather pillow or 4lb lump hammer.

If the scum hadn't chosen to go out on the rob and break into people's homes then he'd still be alive, good riddance!

Well done that student! Totally justifiable, especially if the burglar did in fact lunge for him.

Wouldnt say he necessarily got what he deserved, but if you risk breaking into someones home, then its your own fault really.

Burglar got owned.

Bring back official cutting off of hands for thieves and that'll get them nicking less.

It'll probably backfire a bit for the student, some abuse of the buglars human rights to carve him up like a turkey I bet -_-

What if the poor chap was just trying to find his way home, or trying to help an injured animal that just happened to wander in.

People are so quick to jump to conclusions. I would have made him a cup of tea, and checked his intentions first, before reaching for my nearest bladed weapon!

Good on him, I wish people could defend there houses like that in this country without getting in more trouble than the thieving scrote would for breaking in and stealing stuff....

I'd have thought that would be justifiable self defence even in the UK. I think the caveat here is that you can't "defend yourself" if they're facing away from you (the implication being that they're running away). But being lunged at is certainly grounds to use reasonable force. In this case, reasonable == lethal.

Good for him, one less scumbag on this planet.

It will be outrageous if a judge ****s over the student for this. There is no point ruining his life with a criminal record for defending himself.
