Learning Guitar

Anyone got any tips for barre chords B, C and D ?

I know I can do them E-shape further up the fret board but I cant for the life of me get them in the A-shape barre chord :

Ive tried pinky, ring and middle and the 1st finger to barre, but cant do it - I see some people putting their thumb over the top ???

Any advice appreciated :)

Yes, this is an utter nightmare to get right. You will be screaming at the moon with frustration - gnarghhhh!

The correct was to do it is to forget using three fingers and use your third finger (wedding ring!) to make the 'A shape'. This is pretty tricky since you have to make sure that high E rings cleanly. Once you get the hang of it, this way of playing allows you to add extra notes with your pinky - neat :)

Forget the thumb - that is used primarly for 'e shape' barre chords. Between you & me (and the forum...), an F barre chord on the first fret is the hardest chord you can play and make sound nice.

Well played, can you point me in the direction of the tab you used for this?
I can play a bit of guitar, bash some chords out but don't ever seem to put myself to learning a song start to finish, any recommendations?

You should know E. Use the same chords for the chorus but use power chords.

Then E....

Then all you have to learn is the Intro :) (the hardest part) Works very well as an acoustic song too.

Stay on the e for 8 beats and then repeat.


You have to make sure the d (4th) string is muted. You do this with your first finger.

The part where you think I might be baring it might be where I'm playing e for 8 beats.

Make sure you slide up and down the neck to change chords.
 
I just got round to listening to that Gustov - very impressive. Now, if only you tried to look more gozzy eyed, you would have looked like Thom himself :p

Paranoid Android is the only song I ever recorded. I spent ages on it but sadly, it got lost when my computer died and the internet copy has expired. I actually ended up preferring my own outro solo to the original since I pulled out something awesome with a ring modulator - happy days :p

Paranoid Android is a tough one, would have loved to have seen that recording. Ah well :(

Hi guys, I swopped out a standard neck pup and put a fender lace sensor gold (came very cheap) in there, on my Yam 112J. Its louder and there is a sound difference where as before it was a subtle difference. Is this pup good for something in particular? or have I bought a medicated lemon drop and don't have a cough :D
....waiting for a vast flood of knowledge to arrive =)

Lace sensors are good for blues in my opinion and experience. Similar to EMG pickups with regards to smoothness and sustain.
 
Thanks for the reply Steve2000, thats good to know, I've seen Eric Claptons name pop up a few times so the blues quality of this pup explains it, my Yamaha has a 5 position pup switch will allow me to select the Lace pup on its own so thats should be good when I learn to play dem blues :)

What I've notice about the new pup its a very clean softer sound, the humbucker is quite twangy compared.

And why why oh why learn lyla :P Horrible Oasis song! Get leaning the importance of being Idol. Relatively easy as well.

There is no right or wrong way to pick but its the way I do it here

You can hear the nice scratchy sound at 00.35

 
Alt picking is an efficient way of playing fast for sure, but it doesn't sound as strong as down picked notes.

When I see people alt pick Master Of Puppets it makes me pull a face.
