Noise - be it from the exhaust or the engine, how much does it matter to you?

Personally, noise matters, a lot. To me a car has to sound good, booting it, or driving normally. But of course I know people who don't mind how it sounds during normal driving, so long as it sounds good under WOT.

So what do you think? Give examples if you want..

I like nice sounding cars, something of which my current one isn't... Golf 1.8 turbo, characterless sound full stop so I need to do something about it, it just whooshes a bit lol.

There's nice sounding and OTT though and it's defining the line... I aren't a fan of raspy sounding exhausts. Moreso beefier bassy sounding really.

Yep I like having a good sounding exhaust, I love the raspy sound my exhaust makes. As long as the exhaust isn't too loud I can't hear my music then I am happy enough.

I like mine but I think as I get older it will wear on me... 1.6 16v with stainless 4-2-1 system and group n stainless exhaust (decat)

Rather loud for a 1.6 lol

Just had the Magnex back box from my CTR before it goes. IT sounded great for a simple OEM style back box in the VTEC and had a nice quiet bumble noise to it normally. My friend has a Toda whale penis cat back and he can't beleive how much better it sounded in VTEC.

Car sounds boring now. There's nothing like a decent exhaust note, but something that drones over distance could get on my boobs.

You cant beat a good exhaust note!

Just taken the cat out of an already nice sounding skyline and i love it, although the misses will complain like **** the next time I have to go over to manchester with her and i dont suppose the ppl next door are too happy at 07:00 when i warm it up, who cares!

Then again if its a nova with a set of six pipes at the back

My M3 sounds furious at 8,000rpm, my 318iS sounds good too. ACS and Eisenmann exhausts.

I liked the sound of the 330d, I really wish I bought an Eisenmann for it.

Matters a lot.

I don't think I could live with a fast car that sounded rubbish.

It would be like having the hottest girlfriend who was celibate.

Only times I don't like the exhaust on mine is when, I'm going somewhere a bit more "respectable" such as a wedding reception, or a family occasion. Or if I get in late on my street as I like our next door neighbours.

Motorway drone I guess is undesirable but i'm definitely used to it now.

Totally worth it for the tunnel VTEC moments though :D

got a cat back powerflow done on mine removing the center box and replacing the back box with a real small one and it now sounds lush :D
when i was standing in the office getting ready to pay i could still hear it rumbling when it was over 50 ft away
certainly turns a few heads when they see an old Volvo rumbling by, even a few scooby owners have commented on it (in a good way) :)

May sound unbelievable to some but i love the sound of mine when booting it. It sounds a lot bigger than it does and no it doesn't sound boy racer fart cannon :p but it does get too much when I'm just driving to and from work, i can't really hear any music. It's defiantly worth keeping it the way it is for me purely for the sound when booting it :D

A lot. My last car was a BMW 323i.

I'd say 50% of my enjoyment of the BMW was refinement, power, toys etc, the other 50% was the noise. Damn I miss that car!

I don't normally care about how an engine sounds, but the other week we were overtaken on the M6 by an Exige, and I almost had to change my pants. It sounded delicious :p

Of course it depends on the sound but I think any great sports car is only improved by a nice sounding engine, which is somewhat different to a nice sounding exhaust. You can tune a modern exhaust to sound nice but to make it sound epic the source needs to be right. BMW CSL is a great example, to my ears coming towards you as good as any car sounds, going away nothing special even with a trick set of pipes.

A lot, it must be as silent as possible when driving calmly, hate noisy cars when you're driving calmly, but I do want to hear it when I floor it.

I especially hate people with small rubbish engines and them big chavy exhausts, so pointless and imo tiring on long drives.
