How much would you need to earn to be "Comfortable"

As a UK citizen, paying UK tax... how much would you need to earn each year, gross, to be comfortable - in a job that gave you satisfaction. Please don't answer with what you would want to earn - I'm sure we would all want to earn so much that we'd have no money issues ever.

Sort of brought on by the discussion on degrees.

I'll start it off.

In a job that stimulated me, and allowed me to do something worthwhile I'd need no more than £25K a year.
 
This again? We have it once a month and it descends into a huge willy waving thread with people posting all sorts despite the fact it depends on what your outgoings are, how you live and where you live.

You need at least £100k! Obviously.

Sorry, since I only come here periodically I had not seen another thread.

I really don't want it to go down the road of willy waving. It's actually a good point that it's dependent on your outgoings - I hadn't actually thought of that. If people are already committed with a large mortgage, car finance etc then their result will be different.
 
in all seriousness, if we assume in this scenario my other half doesn't work (she does currently) and I didn't work, i'd need about 80K p/y. If I didn't have the mortgage, saving for wedding and paying off credit cards, then less.
 
Taking home £1500 a month would be nice. This is the same as earning £25k a year irrc (ignoring student loan repayments).
This is assuming I live at home and so only pay my keep - £300-350 a month.

If I had a £100k mortgage then I would want/need more £££'s.
 
Forget the willy waving, I earn 24k straight, with overtime and on call on top, and I find it hard to live in London. But I know nothing else, as I have lived here all my life.
 
Outside of London, I imagine 25k will let you live a very comfortable life. Comfy could easily be as little as 18k, depending on lifestyle.
