SGI have just brought out a rather mental 'personal supercomputer' called the Octane III. Unlike the old Octanes, which were MIPS processor based, this one includes Xeons.

There are a few models available. The 'cheapest' one has two Intel Xeon quad-core 5500 series and can handle up to 144GB of RAM. The top end one takes 20 Intel Xeon quad-core 5500 series (two/node) processors and 960GB of RAM!

I had a few SGIs back in the day (an O2, an Octane II, a 320, a 540) and they're very cool machines. I think the last big machine they brought out was the Tezro (2003 ish), which was MIPS based and cost upwards of £20,000. You can get them on Ebay for about a grand these days.

Its essentially a blade server. HP do a simular thing, a small version of their blade system that fits on your desk, people buy them for rendering and stuff.
