When parked up do you leave your car in gear?

always leave it in first (or reverse if the other way round on a hill) with handbrake off, my brakes stick if I leave it on..

also I always start a car with the clutch pressed in, just 'incase'

I always leave it in gear, don't trust my handbrake at all and I have lolled at other people handbrake misfortunes before...
Never leave it so that the wheels will point towards the kerb though, it would make sense but... Just, wouldn't do it... :|

1st gear or reverse, always! There are some horror stories of Golf's rolling down drives with the handbrake on!

No or I can't use remote start :(

Isn't that illegal? ;)

I never used to leave it in gear - always parked on the flat, but with the handbrake on (driveway), but was always taught to check if it's in gear and press the clutch down before starting. Now I park on a hill and always leave it in 1st gear, with handbrake on, regardless which way I'm pointing - and also now do it out of habit if I park on the flat. I don't point the wheels towards the kerb because they would then stick out into the road, which would be bad (narrow road).

Funny how I'm noticing a trend here with it only being girls who seem to have issues with cars being left in gear :p a couple of my female friends are exactly the same. One of them parked on a fairly steep hill the other week, stuck the handbrake on (out of gear) and got out, so I pointed out to her that if it failed the car would roll straight down the hill and into the main road (dual carriageway, as it happens, although a 40 limit), and suggested she left it in gear, which she poo-pood and said that wouldn't do anything. So naturally, I stuck it in 1st (she was outside the car with the door open at this point) and released the handbrake. Cue gasps of horror and surprise as the car moved backwards 2 inches then stopped. :D But still she leaves it out of gear :(

Yes ive lost a car before when the handbrake cable snapped, ended up in my neighbours garden haha

I tend to leave it in gear when ever I leave it because I got so used to have a Clutch down starter with a button on my R56.

Me - always lock the steering, so do it depending on what side the kerb is on :)

thats what there told to do in the states
, that way the car will rest against the kerb if it moves
makes sense

But I have always been told that in 1st the compression is too short, and in practice is easier to overcome. So 2nd is better on balance.

Science is required here. Motors meet at Millbrook, 10 minutes.

cant see that being right as cars and bikes start easier in 2nd when you bump start them

I also can't believe people can start up any vehicle without depressing the clutch. You have to be a complete retard to not do it IMO (no offense peeps :o)

Infact, to start the majority of tractors you HAVE to put your foot on the clutch otherwise it won't let you start it.

If people aren't taught to do it that way, why does that make them retarded? I wasn't taught to do it, nor do I drive a tractor, so I don't do it.
