I was going to start this thread but realised it was probably a bad idea given the cars I was going to list, one of them doesn't even exist yet so might be an unfair question.

So lets put it down to personal preference.

If you had the money would you buy:

New BMW 530d / 535d when available (May next year?) Assume it is as good as the current one with more toys, etc

New E class 350 CDi BlueEfficiency Sport

Jag XF 3 litre sport

All will be similar in price. So which would you choose and why?

At the moment, I'm really really liking the Merc. There is something about the Jag I just can't put my finger on and I obviously haven't seen the new 5

Jag, maybe merc, not BMW

See too many BMW's, local taxi firm seem to use the E classes so they will be phased in over the next year, and i like the jag and dont see many :p

This is a hard choice the new 5 series looks spot on imho, wouldn't have an E class prefer the looks of the C class.

Jag looks spot on but i wouldn't buy it (own money) over the BMW.

You are right in that this is a pointless thread - one of the cars doesn't even exist, the other is so new nobody here will have driven it and you don't even want to change for the best part of a year. It's difficult to see its purpose beyond 'wow, he's so cool, look at all the flash motors he hires'. Hey wait a minute... ;)

Anyway being serious I'll ignore the F10 as it doesnt exist yet so its impossible to be rational or objective about it. To me it'd come down to the Merc or the XF. Try as I might I cannot get on with the interior of the Merc so I'd probably take the Jag.

Having said that why not simply keep your E60? It's hardly a bad example, is it? It does everything you want, looks good, is pretty new being a 2007 anyway...

I keep seeing different conflicting images of the F10. Is there any hard proof pictures available?

Thanks matey, you make me feel so warm inside :p ;)

Seriously though, in a year or two these cars will be in the price range I'm looking at, in fact some of the new E class are almost there now

Is it true that if you buy a £59,000 XF you can get £2000 off if you trade your 2000 XJR in to be squashed?

I drove a 99 year XJR earlier this year, as I was seriously considering buying one. Bought the 330 in the end, but now I wish I had taken the plunge, even if it would have killed me (wallet wise...)! What a great car.

If there are XJR's going in the crusher its a sad sad day.

Have any of you actually driven a Pheaton before saying you'd have it over a Merc?

It's an exceptionally well built, massive, Passat. It has no sense of occasion at all.

Merc > it

nope, have you? :p

which is why i said 'probably'
i am not in the market for a massive luxury saloon, but as the phaeton was competition to the S class, i suspect it might be better than an E..

however, this is purely speculation as i have driven none of the above.
to say Merc > it if you haven't driven either is a bit rich as well ;)
depends what you want from a car. i think it's pretty safe to say that for wafting, a phaeton > E class
