I was thinking last night, what game should i play after im through with Mirrors Edge (fantastic game btw :)). Buy a new one or look in my collection for one that i havn't played right through or maybe an old classic.
A few games caught my eye. I knew they we're classics but i was telling myself "don't bother, there ****".

So what games have you tried that are deemed 'classics' by a large number of the gaming community or by critics / reviews? Here's a few of mine.

Supreme Commander
Now i know technically it was a huge step up from previous RPG's, but wow is it dull.
From Dune to C&C (originals, not the recent EA pap), Warcraft 3 and Starcraft to Dawn of War, ive loved them all. I think the problem with Sup Com is its too clinical and i don't care for any of the factions. Lost a marine squad in DoW? noooo!. Your Orc Grunts in War3 are getting hammerd? :( Lost a tin can in Sup Com? couldn't give a ****, theres 200 more of them right behind it. After about 6 missions i turned it off. Ive tried to get into once or twice since then on seperate occasions, but all have resulted in failure :( Just not interested.

Spore
I followed this game for years in its development and it seemed to be taking the form of a superb game with great ideas (plenty of youtube vids of early footage if you didn't). What happened to it? Its as if someone in the company said "its gonna take another 3 years to make it one of the best games of all time" the reply? "have it ready in 3 weeks, just chop it into mini games, don't worry, it'll still sell".
I really did feel robbed when i played it on release day. First part was actually quite fun, growing as a cell, although it was a bit like a polished flash game, but i didn't hold that against it. The other few mini games? utter crap is the only way to describe it.

Would be great to know what games you thought we're a bit meh, but celebrated as classics by everyone else :)

That's one reason I can't get into Supreme Commander, I don't care about any of the units

in Red Alert 2, if a spy dies, he gets a minute silence

Just to let you know, 'they are' contracts to 'they're' not there.

I found it hard to get into SupCom too, although I loved Total Annihilation.

DoW is a very different type of RTS to SupCom, so I don't really think they're overly comparable.

Also, 'we're' is a contraction of 'we are', 'were' is a word in its own right.

I can't seem to get in to Sins of a Solar Empire. I've been plodding along quite happily, building up my system, and suddenly a fleet of incomparable size shows up on my border and plugs away until I smash alt+f4 in frustration. Same thing happened in Homeworld.

This. I wanted to like it. I did. But I can't understand what lots of clicking and grind has to do with having fun.....:(

Play a warrior or rogue. All instant attacks so feels a lot more involved.

Still I can't stand that game any more, just no-one can deny that the combat isn't (or wasn't) fun.

Deus Ex, Ive reinstalled this game so many times but it just does absolutely nothing for me. So many PC gamers love it but try as I might Ive never been able to get more than an hour or two in without getting bored :(.

ARGH best game ever, blasphemy.

Deus Ex. Played it quite a long way through, to the oil tanker level I think, but just wasn't enjoying myself at all.

Same for me (though got a bit further before giving up). Which is weird as the fps/rpg mix is probably my favorite genre. Can't really say what put me off about it either. Just something about it that I didn't really find all that engaging.

I really hate to say it, but these guys jogged my memory. I could just never get into deus ex, or see what the fuss was about.

Someone please convince me to play it again.

Any of the "Total War" games every produced!?!?!?!

Every one gets amazing scores in all the mags but I just cant get into them!!!!

This isn't really a classic as such but highly praised - Bioshock.

I couldn't get into it at all on the 360. I don't know if my experience will change on the PC.

I am really disappointed that 3 people have mentioned Deus Ex in this thread :(

For me it's SupCom to some extent for the same reasons as listed by others, and the Final Fantasy games.
