Story

They plan on raising the male age of retirement to 66 with the possibility of it going up for women as well.

So what's everybodies thoughts on this? People on the news seemed very negative about it.

I don't really see it being that big of an issue, what is an extra year?

Proposed saving of £13 billion a year by doing this.

I also feel they need to strip away the many 'pointless' jobs created in the government/councils.

By the time my working group come to retire i can see it being 68 - 70, all the people i know who are 55 - 60 seem happy to work to 65+, but thats because they enjoy what they do and have good jobs, coupled with the fact the industry needs them.

won't impact tory voters as most will have personal pensions not just waiting for state one, will impact less well off people who would be retiring for say the 2-3 years after it would be brought in, after that it wouldn't make much difference to anyone

For men? I hope the feminist groups have something to say about this.

Edit: Just seen that women in the UK can retire at 60....

Typical conservatives "screw the people, look at the money"
And being old upper middle class farts they're just done it for men, as if we were still in the 1950's or something.

You are aware that the only difference between Labour and Conservative on this particular issue is one of timing? The Conservatives just want to bring it in sooner.

The reason it is being done "just for men" is because the retirement ages for men and women are still out of kilter and are slowing being brought in line.

they should let people over 65 reduce their work hours though but i guess they already thought of that and its not practical

Well, if Labour all those years ago hadn't set up the state pension as a Ponzi scheme, we wouldn't be in quite such a mess now...

The female retirement age is already rising 5 years between 2010 and 2020, which will impact a lot of people who, until a few years ago, expected to retire at 60.

The argument that the ages should always have been equal is perfectly valid, but now it's a case of dealing with many bad decisions made early on and trying to make the best of it in a reasonable manner.

I'm also somewhat confused about the 'screw the people, look at the money' comment, when you then go on to complain that they aren't screwing the people enough...

Conservatives in virtually the same plan as Labour *shocker* :p

I'm sure their latest announcement will go down well on here as well - lulz :p

The Conservative Party says it would create an extra 10,000 university places if elected.
\o/

Yet they still can't avoid being Tory at heart

It would fund them by giving a 10% discount on student loan repayments to those who repaid ahead of schedule.
In other words, those that can afford it, pay less, those that can't afford it, pay it in full. Three cheers!

the age of retirement has absolutely nothing to do with when you can or have to retire or how much you can or have to work.

It simply marks the time at which you can draw your state pension. It is in fact called the state pension age officially.
Your results

You will reach State Pension age on
3 April 2053
You will be
68 years old
Time until you reach State Pension age
43 years, 5 months and 28 days
To qualify for a full basic State Pension you will need to have built up
30 years of National Insurance payments
You should receive your claim pack in
December 2052
You may be entitled to receive Pension Credit from
3 April 2053
So apparently it's already in place that by the time I can claim a pension the age will be 68 for men

Personally have not got an issue with it. We have an ageing population and something has to be done. Will probably keep creeping up and i wouldnt be surprised if its 69-70 when im retiring.

So you would rather the Labour approach of "screw the people, screw the money, line our own pockets?"

Obviously it was just labour pocket lining hahahahaa

Its not going to be any different when the tories has the next two terms. People are living longer and the world population is getting higher. We have to pay for that. No matter who gets in year on year we will progressively get worse off.

All this worrying about food shortages and energy shortages. Why not start population control instead? Why because that won't win any votes.

The tories will change little. My council tax won't reduce, neither will my energy bills and I'm pretty sure regardless of how low oil drops my petrol won't get much cheaper under the tories.

I agree completely, very little will change if they get into power.

Will be interesting to see if he stands by his comments today that his party shall face freezes on pay/job cuts IF they do get into power.

They dont need to raise pensions ages etc.. thay can save a lot of money from qungos, abolishing tax credits as it costs us 25billion a year, increasing social housing to help reduce local taxes.
They arnt doing those because the rich or well of folk wont like it.

In fairness with the economic mess Labour have left behind (yet again), this is not really a surprise.

Once again Boy George proves he is totally out of his depth, he has provided no evidence that he has what it takes to lead this country through the global economic crisis. All he can do is make minor changes to existing Labour policies.
