Game over

We've learned from industry sources that AMD / ATI has already won the GPU deal for the next generation XboX console. It looks like Microsoft was happy with first Xeons GPU and it wants to continue using the same, especially since the new ATI GPU should keep the compatibility with legacy games.

The consoles refresh was supposed to happen in 2010 but due to the recession both Microsoft and Sony have decided to push its plans for 2012 and keep the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 alive for more than it was originally planned.

We don’t know how the GPU looks like but judging from the timeline when it is supposed to be delivered we suspect that it might be a 28nm part.

Hmmm Fud rarely posts more than speculation to be honest and I know for a fact that Xbox360 and PS3 were never planned for replacement in 2010. Both consoles were / are expected to have a roughly 10 year life with a new model not appearing until ~7 years after release.

Another 3 years for a new console :(

Having gone from pc gaming to consoles not all that long ago, I am aware how much uglier the graphics are, so was kinda hoping for something new sooner, as I am quite fond of console gaming.

Wonder what kinda specs this is going to have... will it likely be like current 5870, etc, or based more on whatever architecture is coming next from ATI?

Look on the bright side. The new consoles will be that much more powerful released in 2012 than if they appeared in 2010!

I doubt either the 360 or PS3 will be replaced within the next 3 years. I think the Nintendo's Wii has taught Misco$oft and $ony that content is more important than "cutting edge". Why spend billions developing the most powerful console in the world when most people prefer good games to pretty games? Sure 1080P gaming would be nice, but most people will not be willing to shell out another £300 to £400 to get it.

It can't have cost M$ billions to develop the Xbox surely, its got a P3 CPU and an ATI gfx card, normal RAM and a custom motherboard.

They probably spent all the money on fast-talking blaggers aka "consultants" who came up with a name and logo.

Big companies seemingly can't think for themselves in these matters.

The original Xbox has an nvidia gfx card and a P3@700mhz, the 360 has a custom ATI gfx chip (similar to x1900 era but with unified shader architecture) and a triple core (6 thread) PowerPC CPU at 3.2mhz.

the xbox has a triple core 3.2ghz IBM processor and the graphics is a custom designed ATI card. and as you said, the motherboard is also custom.

coming from PC to console is a huge difference in temrms of graphics
Not that bothered that next gen comes a bit late to be honest as long as they can make good titles and use as much graphics power they can on the current one I'm happy.

Lol at that BS comment of it being released in 2010 no company in their right mind would release an xbox/ps3 unless their target audience (us) has a mainstream TV which is nextgen.

The ps4/720 should be 3D when it's realised so it will be interesting.

The release of the ps4/720 will be around 2014 if your lucky and will most likely be the last console to be developed, ofc there will probley be upgraded versions of current gen consoles die shrinked + a few more features but thats about it.

Not suprised ATI won the Xbox deal, Nvidia need to up their game.

And I think the RROD failures was obviously a combination of 90NM GPUS + Microsoft creating their own PCB version of the GPU which envitabley led to overheating which made the solder from the GPU to the Motherboard warp and disconnect.
