Hey, ive been way out of the loop with whats what regarding new PC components for a while now. After recently buying ARMA2 and watching my PC crumble i thought its about time i got some new bits!.

Im currently running a C2D6600@3ghz, 2gb RAM, an Asus p5b and a 4970.

Id like to spend as little as possible, so ive decided to keep my ancient Chieftec Dragon case (Will new boards fit in this?), CD drive, graphics card and hopefully my PSU (Corsair 500, i guess this'll be too low though?) so id just be needing a new motherboard, cpu and ram. Id like to go with a small 64gb SSD too however my budgets pretty tight (£500) and i guess i could make do with the hdd i have at the moment for a while.

Id like to overclock and would love it to be pretty future proof, i just have no idea whats good value for money or what overclocks well so any help is more than welcome!

Cheers

What decision made you want to go for an i7 rig specifically? Have you considered going for an i5 rig instead (Or to really confuse you, an 1156 core i7?)

They're cheaper and offer pretty good price / performance if you're not doing any video editing or things like that. :)

Im not sure, i guess i know i7 is the top of the range right now and if i were to future proof myself properly an i7 would be the way to go.

The only main use of it would be for Gaming really

Have you seen bench marks against the core i5 and core i7, the core i5 beats the core i7 with ease when gaming. My budget is £1k, the core i7 couldnt do it but core i5 can and much better for gaming :D

Here is a benchmark for you to read since you couldn't produce one to back up your nonsense claims.

Notice how it shows the i5 not being, as you say, "much better for gaming" or "beating the core i7 with ease". In fact, it shows it to be slightly worse.

May I just tell you that the core i7 is tripple slot memory, core i5 is dual slot memory. Your saving about £130 for 2-3 frames? Tbh, I would say the core i5 is better from it having 2gb less in memory, being 8 x 8 in cross fire and sli where as core i7 16 x 16. Core i5 wins imho.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about so I'm not going to bother arguing with you.

As you have already admitted earlier in the thread you are are on a limited budget, because of this you are trying to make claims that an i5 set-up - which you can afford, is somehow better than an i7 set-up - which you can't.

Deluded.

Right i clearly do know what I am on about. The core i7 920 and the core i5 750 can be overclocked to 4ghz. The core i7 920 beats the 750 hands down when it comes to video editing etc but not gaming. The socket 1366 is triple channel memory and have 16 x 16 pci e. The socket 1136 is dual channel memory and 8 x 8 pci e when is corssfire and sli. I may of got it wrong that the 750 is faster, i said that becasue i seen on a link posted on here that the 750 was faster. But put it this way. For extra 2 frames to 3 frames, You would rather pay £120 - £150 for them 2 frames? I bet you if the p55 was tripple channel and 16 x 16, it would win when it comes to gaming :D. So :p

hang on! if something had something that it doesn't it would be better?! Thats crazy talk! My Volvo V50 would be miles better if it had a 5 litre turbo charged engine, but it doesn't.....

Fact is, if you want 16x/16x SLI you have to go 1366 - end of story. If you want to go i5 and are happy with it, good for you - just don't make outlandish claims to justify yourself

And how the hell is LESS RAM and LESS PCIe lanes BETTER?????

lol, 1st of all 16 x 16 vs 8 x 8. there is about 2 - 5 % performance different. And i aint saying it is better having less ram. The fact is that its 2 - 3 frames down from the core i7 which has 6gb where as core i5 has 4gb. So basically if you think buisness wise, if he mainly does gaming, the core i5 would be the best route as you save over £100 and only 2 to 3 frames difference. He doesn't have to, if he got the cash i would get the 920. But like i said, im just saying. And you can't put a 5l in a volvo v50 mate :)
