I need to watch some horror movies. I'm looking for ones that are no more than 2 years old. What can you recommend? I've already seen The Ring. Please recommend a few. I like Science Fiction as well, so horror movies in that genre are fine as well.

I find Do not link to competitors! - Thundycat Which one do you recommend?

"Wrong Forum" is one hell of a scary film, especialy when all the zombies start attacking the innocent victim.

I would vote for the Scream trilogy. The first one was a real turning point in changing the make up of the typical genre of horror films.

"Let the Right One In" - Swedish vampire movie. Really, really good. One of the best this year.

"Rec." - Spanish zombie movie. The US movie quarantine was a shot-for-shot remake of this, but Rec is much, much better. Highly recommended.

And, if you get the chance, pick up a box set of the series "Dead Set". I didn't expect much from this but it turned out to be really good. I was well impressed, but you should watch all episodes in one sitting. The last episode is intense.

And for something a bit more psychological, try the Lars Von Trier flick "Antichrist". There are some proper gross scenes in that. It's a bit arty, but still really good.

Edit: Looking at that list - i'd watch "The Orphanage" as well.

Scream changed nothing in the horror genre. It was a spoof of the horror genre that turned into a franchise, then spawned the Wayan brothers' drivel that was "Scary Movie". (How a spoof of a spoof works, i'll never know.)

The "Scream" movies took the already established format of the horror genre, regurgitated it, then told you it was ok to do this because, "hey, we paying homage to it".

Really good horror movies will not only scare the audience, but push the boat out and tell a story in a unique way. "Let the Right One In" is a great example. I've never seen a vampire movie like this.

Good horror at it's best will explore the human condition whilst scaring the living crap out of the audience. It should touch the audience in a personal way instead of just shocking you. It should make you believe that universal human themes are being played out in a totally fictional universe, yet somehow strangely grounded in reality.

Scream does all of this?

Don't get me wrong, I like "The Evil Dead" as much as the next guy, but the "Scream" trilogy?

Give me a break.

These were the two movies I immediatly though of when I saw this thread. Both excellent movies, some of the best horror I have seen in a while.

I suggest it every time but "The Auditon", japanese horror i.e the only "real" horror left in the world.

The Mist - Pretty fun movie, not overly scary but very cool none the less.

A Nightmare on Elm Street - for some classic horror lols.

The Thing - Old but still very creepy.

If you could live with old, The Thing is a fantastic movie in surround sound :D Other suggestions are Poltergeist, old and dated but still pretty enjoyable.

To be fair I just watch horrors to laugh so my advice is probably not that helpful :p

Anything French, they ARE the current masters of horror.

Haute Tension, Inside, Martyrs, Frontiers, Calvaire and the upcoming Horde looks something special.

Martyrs is the single greatest horror film i've ever seen and i'm sure many people will second this opinion.

And that makes it a good film?

If you like the look of Eraserhead but want something more accessible, easier to understand and a lot more fun (with a great electro/industrial soundtrack) then definitely check out Tetsuo: The Iron Man. Awesome movie.

Of course that makes it a good film. I don't need all of the films I watch to be clean cut with full explanations for them to be enjoyable.

Yeah +1 to the rec and the orphanage. Any thing foreign does it for me for some reason. Us/British horror simply does not cut it. The Grudge is also good.

@SixTwoSix. French horror?! Never heard of those. Severely dents my film buff credentials..

Don't beat yourself up, only found out about most of them myself over the last 2 years. The french are truly leading the way though, plus unlike most hollywood BS there is a strong subtext in a lot of their horror movies.

On another note, just finished The Orphan...an amazing film, really surprised me, was expecting run of the mill horror and thrills and it stands head and shoulders above pretty much any other horror movie this last 6 months.
