Bangkok - seeks survival guide

Come on people, share some of your pics!

Here's a few of mine...

A boat-bus thing. Great fun, most of the passengers got soaked. :D

This was on a peddle-boat at Lumphini park. :D

Lumphini park also has dragons.

A giant head next to a fountain.

I was there when one of the bars burned down.

Taken from the Queens birthday celebrations. Was an awesome night.

Several nights it rained so hard that the street (Soi 4) became a river. My girlfriend didn't want to get her shoes soaked, so I carried her up the road in my arms. And much to her embarrasment all the Thai girls along the street were laughing and shouting "Good maan!". :D

Spice Club - Absolutely loved this nightclub. Was there most nights. So much fun.

So I had a wander over to Soi Cowboy the other night. It's just full of bored prostitutes and a mix of ugly old men and drunk young men. The neon lights are all very pretty but unless you're out with mates it's not a massive amount of fun. Unless you can pretend to yourself that the young Thai girl talking to you isn't doing so purely for the money, and maybe you're just a special guy.

Getting around :

You didn't menton what was locally called the "baht bus"
Basically a pickup with a cage on the back and seats..
Did you not use these?
cost about 35 baht to get all the way across town.

30mins of rain :

I actually didn't see a baht bus the entire time I was in Bangkok. They were everywhere in Pattaya, but I never even saw a single one in BKK.

I don't believe they exist in Central Bangkok. They're very much local to certain areas. I know they don't exist where I live. But they're common in Phuket and Pattaya so maybe it's just a tourist thing.

There's a bar there with a glass dancerfloor upstairs

let's just say it's an interesting view when downstairs ;)

You dont get baht buses (songthaews) in Bangkok, only the smaller cities.

Funny you mention soi cowboy skull as I took a walk down there on thurs as me and the other half were staying in the Park Plaza for a few days, nothing impressive at all.

So what bars/clubs do you recommend then?

That's what I'm wanting to know. As an example there is a nice club/bar on Khao San actually, all wooden interior, very american style, with live music etc. 99% Thai in there on a friday or saturday night. That's the sort of place I prefer. I'm just not enthralled by the idea of spending time in a neon-lit gogo with hookers looking to get whatever they can out of me and calling it "a great night out." :D

There are also lots of songthaews (baht buses) in Bangkok.
