Interesting question this. Assuming you had 50k to blow on any car

A) what would you buy
and

B) would you buy something you could never afford to run - say a ferrari 550 maranello, but you'd run untill the bills got too big (after paying the last bills of course) - then sold on maybe 10 months later having known that you can class one of ferrari's greatest as your "Previous cars"

I'd buy an F355 and spend the rest on running it.

Wouldn't buy something i couldn't afford to run, simply because if you try and sell something like a Ferrari with big bills or limited recent history it becomes worth a lot less and proves hard to shift.

TVR Griffith, E39 M5, 968 CS and a Clio V6.

Anything I would want is either a fair bit less than 50k, or a fair bit more!

For 50k? Hmm, and Audi A8 6.0 W12 LWB on the used market I expect. Then a 5-series touring of some ilk for ferrying the kids about.

Predictable I know but I can't think of any car I would take over another 996 GT3 other than perhaps a CSL and something for daily duties. Having said this I had both a 996 GT3RS and CSL on my drive today and the RS is another level on in terms of 'event' so I would probably move past the CSL to the GT3......just like last time. :D

must say the variations in suggestions in surprising.

I was expecting mostly ferrari / porsche suggestions

This would do nicely :D

I'd more than likely buy something for a fair amount less, and spend the rest on insurance and getting it upto A* condition inside and out

I'd have an E92 M3 I would imagine, and I'd keep it long term.

Pointless picking something you can't run, I dont like swapping cars frequently, I like to enjoy long term ownership :)

Nissan GTR. Its over £50k new though.
I don't think there is anything to touch it for the money, Ferrari performance with Japanese reliability.

E92 M3
Slightly used GTR
Atom (supercharged)
TTRS
R8 (if prepared to tolerate a wait of a good few months)

Pretty much the only ones in the frame.

surprised to see the M3 being mentioned, even if E92 M3.

Surely for performance and sense of an "event" its got to pale into insignificance compared with the other cars suggested here (such as 2nd hand GTR, F355, GT3 etc..)

GTR, obviously. If I only had the 50k and no more (unlikely if you had 50k to blow on a car?) then of course I'd not buy it with no means to maintain it.

I'd want a 997 GT3, but for 50k Id settle for a nearly new 997 C4s. Can't decide between the coupe or cab atm.

If I wanted new, I'd consider a GTR (but I'd always be thinking of the porsche).

edit - my other thought, 3 cars:

1)AMG E55 - 20k-ish. Uber saloon for long trips
2)Audi RS6 saloon - 20k-ish. 4wd monster power, great all weather ability.
3)330d - 10k-ish. Something to commute to work in.

The downside is running costs x3

Stonking buy for the money. Was assuming you'd be the first to say what else you could have got for the money though !
