a 5770 or a 4890?

it performs a bit better but has no DX 11 support.

It remains to be seen whether and when that will matter.

I would probably go for 5770 because its newer tech i think.

5770 in my opinion; cheaper, cooler, quieter and the performance difference isn't massive; I wouldn't be surprised if the gap was closed when new drivers come along aswell.

Half of the bandwidth makes a difference unfortunately. 5770 without OC doesn't perform any better than 4870 and is in fact slightly worse but matches when overclocked. It is still a significant gap between 4890 I think. I'd go for 4890 or GTX260/275 as there is no need to use DirectX 11 yet.

I sort of agree with Krugga, however it depends on how long you think you will keep it. If you're likely to hang on to it for a year or more then I reckon you might want to snap up a 5770 instead. You don't want to be left wishing you had DX11 support when new titles next year start showing far superior visuals (think tesselllation) . Of course by then if you're thinking you need more horse power you could always add a second one, should be cheaper by then (motherboard permitting of course).

Surely if you don't mind Crossfire and its issues (microstuttering, scaling, min fps rate) it may be worth getting one 5770 and waiting for a price drop and more DirectX 11 titles coming up next year. However, I don't really see them coming that quickly bearing in mind that DirectX 10 wasn't that popular in many games. But that's a subject to another discussion. Of course if you have enough money, just go for 5850 ;)

I'm assuming the 4890 you're looking at is around £150+? I would try and convince your mate to grab a 5850 instead to be honest, it's definitely worth the difference in cost and it'd last him a bit longer.
