Whole house power consumption

It costs what it costs. I generally try to turn things off and use as little heating/water as possible, but not to the point where I lose sleep over it. The supposed 60% rises in the next 3 years I don't believe. Nobody can afford that. I don't see the point KNOWING how much it costs me as I'll just feel bad for it. We do our best to minimize usage and it costs an arm and leg and always rises. That's it really. I'm not going to go without a hair dryer/dishwasher/fridge freezer/computer realistically so I don't really see the point in monitoring it "for fun".

Do you pay your bills on monthly DD?

I do this, and give them a new reading every 5 months or so, and then adjust the payments.
 
Yes Direct Debit. I mean I know how much I pay monthly obviously, just don't really need/want to know what makes it all add up. No interest in that for me as I know it wouldn't be anything I could simply "stop using".

Thats the attitude i take towards it. I dont waste energy, but i do not actively minimise it to the detrement of my life. I review the rates the companies charge every now and again, but the consumption is going to be what it is going to be.
 
Mine confuses me, right now the only thing running is my PC & modem & it says -energy now 31 watts, even when I fire up a game it never goes over 50 watts even tho I have a 650 watt PSU etc,
 
Often if you are aware of how much you use, you might be willing to forgo the 3KW hairdryer for a few days a week when you realise quite how electricity hungry it is.

"650W" is the rated maximum safe output for that PSU. The load of the computer will vary, sounds like you have fairly lean (power consumption wise) hardware.

Is that a energy monitor on the plug for your PC or the whole house? A whole house will be much higher that 31w. However, a PC can use significantly less energy then the PSU is rated.

fair enough, I've done a few things like only using low powered machines for downloading / server, my quad core gaming machine is ONLY on when I'm playing games

It doesn't work like that, it doesn't just measure the socket you have the device plugged into it measures what comes thru the actual meter & transmits it wirelessly to the little screen device.
Mines just gone up another 15 watts as the A rated freezer just came on
 
My old housemate had little understanding of how electricity works.

Our house was a large Edwardian terrace, and a nightmare to keep warm in the lounge. He'd been using a 2kW heater each evening blowing on him for about 3-4 hours.

He was then confused by our high electricity bill.

I had to explain that 3 hours of that heater uses the same electricity as my machine idling for 40 hours!

Idiot could have just used a duvet instead!

You must be getting the units mixed up. You must be at least a factor of 10 out. Sure it's not gone up 150w or even 1.5KW?

My PC is on 24/7 but it uses very little power idle anyway so will be interesting to see what our house consumption is!

My freezer has an A rating that works out at a cost of running it at £30 a year according the the info you get, so it's definitely not running at 150w or 1.5KW.

I don't get what you mean by is my monitor on the plug for my PC or the whole house because if you have one yourself you know that it transmits from the meter
