I'm after a new mattress and know nothing about them, can somebody tell me about what is a suitable budget and what is worth getting.

I know it's not the most interesting subject, but a necessary evil.

Cheers

If you don't understand apostophes, don't use them.

As for mattresses, spend a decent amount and then replace it within 10 years.

Bought my 8inch memory foam off of Ebay, one of the best purchases i have ever made.

:)

I'm thinking of a new memory foam mattress to replace my currently sprung one. Never thought of ebay but the prices seem reasonable. Just wondering about the quality!

Glad someone had the balls to ask about such a dull thing :p

I need a new mattress too, but it has to get up into the attic room through a hole in the floor about 600mm x 1000mm... And it has to be kingsize. Can a memory foam mattress be folded in half for a couple of minutes without damaging it? The last mattress i put up there (a standard spring mattress) ended up with a ridge along the length of it on the fold line :(

Memory foam mattresses (:p) are usually shipped in a roll, you get them out of the packaging and they expand, from what I've seen at least.

From someone who used a mattress topper, make sure you get a memory foam that can combat the extra heat that the foam holds, they really do affect the temperature of the bed.
I lost count of the times I'd wake up to a sopping wet bed only to find it cold in the room.
Once I ditched the memory foam my sleeping habits returned and I no longer overheat in bed while I sleep.

This is true, it is packed in a vacuum sealed bag, take it out and let it breath for a few hours while it resets itself and airs off all of the manufacturing smells and free radicals.

My girlfriend just got a new memory foam mattress and I don't like it as I get hot during the night on a normal mattress and the memory foam really holds the heat. It also does my back in!

I'd go for a quality sprung mattress myself.

We bought a Temper mattress a couple of years ago and it's one of the best things I've bought. It was a bit hard at first and took some getting used to but when I now sleep on other mattresses I get a bad back! They're not cheap though but considering the amount of time you use it I think it's worth it.

If you can't spell 'apostrophe'...:p

Anyway I'd prefer 'If you don't understand apostrophes, LEARN HOW TO USE THEM'

In my experience, people tend to continue misusing apostrophes deliberately, even when they've been taught how to do it properly. They've apparently decided that 'their' way is right and that's the end of it :)

I find a sprung mattress which has a ~2" layer of memory foam on top quite comfortable. Currently I have a Sealy Posturepedic Ultra. Pure memory foam mattresses seem very warm.
