Why are their two most powerful M series car the X5 M and the X6 M. What is it with this obsession with ridiculously high powered 4X4s.

If I bought an M3 I'd be pretty furious that whilst I've supposed to have bought a high performance "sports car" there are drivers in 4X4s which would leave me for dead.
Why is it they give the X5 and X6 M 550bhp twin turbocharged 4.4 V8s yet the rest of the M range are lacking that sort of power? If they're offering this sort of power in 4x4s, then surely they should be producing M3s, M5s and M6s which hit 0-60 much quicker than they do.

Why are they producing M versions of 4X4s when there aren't any M versions of the current Z4 or the 7 Series? A Z4 M would be a genuinely interesting car, a 2300kg brick that happens to have 550bhp isn't.

The ultimate thing is, car manufacturers are being encouraged to lower their average emissions so WHY WHY WHY are BMW neglecting proper performance coupes for these 4x4s. A Z4 M would interest a car enthusiast, an X5 M would interest a WAG. I also don't see how such a car (a 4x4 is supposedly an every day car not a weekender) has a place in a society where petrol costs are gradually rising.

Thoughts?

Because wealthy men like to buy their wives toys that they actually want but need to make sure the wife can use it...

At least from people I know this is the case and also the reason why these things come up for sale with less than 10k miles in a few months when said male has found something else he wants and has bought for the wife.

I've not got any data to back this up but would an X5 M seriously leave an M3 for dead? I'm going to say no.

What if you want to stonk up and down the Autobahn, what if you want one-upmanship down the local golf club, what if you want to show off?

This is why big powered 4x4's sell.

You don't buy a car that weighs 2300KG if you want a high performance driving experience.

It's a flagship car to give a halo effect to the rest of the range.

It gives wealthy people something to splash their cash on and BMW have obviously found a market in that.

My thoughts are anyone girly enough to own a non-supercharged MINI has no right commenting on the manlyness of ///M division cars.

I dont think scott212 understands much about the car market. Every comment here is more bizarre than the last.

Quite clearly someone is buying these monsters.
What would you rather have, BMW making money from said suckers, thus aiding development of the cars we really want (e.g. lightweight 1 series with an M engine), or would you rather the profits go to Audi, who'll then spend the money on filling another pointless niche with a piece of driving dross based upon the Golf?
