Save the planet - go vegetarian....

Eating meat is a very inefficient way of feeding people though. The amount of crops and energy it takes to grow a cow would much better just growing vegetables for human consumption.

I personaly don't buy into the great global warming swindle as I don't think global warming is man made, I do however question whether there are enough resources on the planet to feed every person with the typical meat based western diet.

Taking the world as a whole (I know you said western world only) there aren't that many meat eaters, furthermore, there's an increase in vegetarianism and other such fussy eaters so I don't think meat consumption is on the increase, especially owing to the horrific prices people now pay for meat.

So even within the western world I think meat eating is not increasing, if anything it is coming down... no?

pfft that's wuss talk there

I think we've found ourselves a vegetarian hippy here guys, let's beat him with our alpha sticks :p

but you realise the cows bit was a joke right?

and obviously they'll not eat trees, but to me, it makesw no sense that they want to protect the planet, but eat vegetation which is essentially what is saving the planet. and obviously eating a lettuce a day isn't going to have a massive effect on the environment, like deforestation, but you understand where I'm coming from? this does however have the issue - if veggies don't eat meat, and can't morally eat vegetables, what's left for them to eat? :p

I enjoy meat just as much as the next guy :)

Also, what do you think your tasty animals are eating? They're all vegetarians :)

yea, and look where eating vegetables has got them! eaten!

and I tend to only eat meat stuffed with more meat, I'll eat birds of prey, lions bears and the like, or if I'm feeling lazy Turducken (turkey stuffed with a duck, stuffed with a chicken)

It's the alpha way :p

If it comes down to a choice between giving up cars or meat then NOOOOOOO!!!!

Kind of like the idea of meat prohibition though so there would be greasy underground steak speakeasies serving up juicy illegal T-bones.

It works well on paper, but it is flawed in execution. How are we to dissolve our meat industry, distribute crops around the world without monopoly and convince people to stop eating meat?

To be honest, I think a gut busting steak is a good trade off for killing the human race.

The truth is that people will not change as meat just tastes good and everywhere you go 90% of all meals have meat/fish in it. Even if the price of meat would double people would still buy it.

Difficult to execute in short time but businesses change and adapt to people's needs. This could be easily done withing 10-20years period.

If we keep the same diet we have now, it's far from clear how we are going to feed the extra people.

That's not a diet problem, that's a population problem! Essentially we live in a closed, self-regulating system, if the population gets too high to sustain then malnourishment/disease will bring it back into equilibrium. If we alter our eating practices to allow this extra 2bn people to be fed then what do you suggest we eat whenever each one of them has 2 kids and once again there is nothing to eat?

i watched something on tv about insects having more protein in them than steak and being far better for the environment. they were trying to persuade more people in europe to eat them like the rest of the world

I made a supposition. However I am right that the western world's meat eating is tailing off. Sure developing countries may be on the up, because of new money, but it won't last and the population % is probably offset by the "western" world's reduction in meat.

Besides it's just 1 source.
