Can a 21 year old woman have a healthy romantic relationship with a 16 year old boy?

Sort of answered your own question in the thread title. Can a woman love a boy? - only if it's her son - and not in the way you're depicting :p

Would the reactions have been the same if he was 21, and she was 16?

I'd think it was very odd if one of my mates was dating a 16 year old bird, and mock him for it constantly.

Cause it's not exactly about marriage is it? It's just a relationship. Some people have serious relationships under 16 and get married later on in life with them.

Why are you getting so upset over a general guidance? By and large, people under sixteen won't be looking to settle/seriously date anyone. They're just children who've suddenly been introduced to hormones and think that the world owes them. Indeed, many people under 16 want to rutt like dirty monkeys, but they're a very far way off ever achieving that goal, let alone looking for a life-partner.

The rule doesn't need to apply to anyone under 16 because those under 16 shouldn't need to apply it. When you're that age you have around a year's leeway. The rule only applies once you enter your late teens and early twenties and as such the waters become a little murky.

No. And this will be for one, and only one simple fact: 16 year old girls are impressionable, vacuous idiots.

Think of the gap between your 16 year-old self and your 18-year old self. Now think about yourself in your early twenties and your 16 year-old self. You are very, very different people. There is a huge gap in maturity, life experience and emotional intelligence between a 16 year-old and a 21 year old. I could never, ever date anyone that young despite it being 'legal' for the simple fact it would feel like I was constantly babysitting.

Why should it apply to anyone under 16?

It stops working.

for a 14 y/o:

14 / 2 = 7 + 7 = 14. So a 14 year old can date a 14 year old without being "creepy".

for 13:

13 / 2 = 6.5 + 7 = 13.5. So a 13 year old can date a 13.5 year old, but not visa versa. So you're stuffed.

Possibly makes sense for sex, the youngest legal age being 14 in Germany.

I thought it was Japan, though technically it doesn't have one.

As for the topic, I have a friend who's 18, but she has been with a guy since she was 16 and he was 21 at the time, and they're still together.

Though to be fair, he isn't the most mature of people.

Nope that's often said but it incorrect .... of course Japan has a minimum age of consent; nation criminal code has it at 13 but prefectural law varies between that and 18 (under corruption of minor laws).

To be honest ... if I apply the golden rule I get 24 and that seems a reasonable lower limit for me anyway ...

Yes, and a good thing that is too. Then again, if you take a standard margin of error ±10%, your... ahem... "target" minimum becomes 18 again.

My hero.

All of you lot are inbred on those isles anyway, that formula is preventing you from making the incest worse on the isles! :p

Haha luckily i'm not from here, therefore not part of one of 5 family names that dominate here (and as you said, are all related!!)
