I think i have just blown my laptop gfx??

I bought it 2nd hand for £500 its a Asus G1s 2ghz Core 2 Duo,2gb Ram,160gb HDD and 8600m GT.
I have been looking at the dell vostros and studios and they seem great for there price, Particulary the Dell Vostro 1720 with 2.5 core 2,4gb ram,9600gs for £519. Can you get one better than that for the price??
Not to fussed about blu ray, But i need 4 USB Ports,Esata and relatvely light weight
Thanks

to be frank and as much as i hate to admit it, the Dells are very good value indeed. Can i ask? why do you NEED a laptop? desktops are massively cheaper and massively more powerful - seriously.

Well i am still going to ring asus and find the price for a new mobo? But by the sounds of it i have blown my 8600m GT So not much point of a new mobo unless they replace the 8600m GT? Do they do this?
I just wanted opinions on what i should get if it seems pointless to get a new motherboard.

for £500 you could get a m achine that would run next to everything at max. Appart from Crysis but hey, it actually sucks as a game anyway and can only be run by water cooled gold lined, super computers.

true, it does look like that but...... can you answer my question - do you NEED a laptop? if so why? They are chronically bad for gaming contextually compared to desktops.

If you had killed the gpu it would be unlikely that the machine would boot. I'm still going with you've killed the little bios like chip and the rest is likely to be fine.

Definitely call Asus and get a quote for the repair, specifically one for a new motherboard and one for new motherboard + new gpu. They may refuse to differentiate between the two, which is fair enough as soldering a gpu onto a motherboard is a bitch.

encouraging a monkey to rub it the right way is also a bitch. Tough times. ;-)

Dont forget a PSU, case, keyboard, mouse, monitor. Are you sure you should be putting it together with your track record?
Did you even try to get the laptop fixed? Seems like a repair through Asus wouldnt be that expensive if you've just blown up 1 chip.

I might have missed this being asked, but how are you able to check device manager if the video card is knackered?

Yes i am sure i can put it together i have been building pcs for a few years now and it was just a pure accident that i dropped the screw.
I already have psu,os,kboard e.t.c i said this earlier ;) I tried ringing Asus today but kept getting cut off will try tomorrow or send email tonight.
To be honest z0mbi3 i am not sure, I would imagine it just switched it self to onboard gfx.

Has anyone got a good story for me to say if they ask how the gfx broke? lol as im thinking they may say its my own fault for messing with it e.t.c

As someone suggested its possible he's fried the chip that tells the pc what GFX it is- so upon starting up the OS has detected this still working, but unidentifiable gfx chip and gone into compatability mode
