Hi

Please help me with this as i've just spend 4 hours trying to work out why my sons new build wont post

Spec
Asus P5q deluxe
intel E8600
4gb Kingston Ram
ATI 4890
PSU - one that ran his old amd 4000 (thermaltake 560w)

Everything starts fine but the monitor doesnt come on so cant go into BIOS

Ive tried
swapping his old 8800gt back in, no use
swapping the ram, using one stick of mine that I know works
taking out the ram completly
swapping the card in other pci slots

I know his 19in monitor works as it worked before i rebuilt the pc

Any ideas please as this is getting on my **** and my son comes back tomorrow so I aint gonna be popular

Thanks in advance

have you tried clearing cmos just to make sure everything is at default? other than that i can only think it might be faulty?

ye tried all those, reset CMOS, multiple connections on the 4890, different monitor no use, do you think the PSU could be the problem ?

btw, all the lights on the mobo, cpu fan and GPU come on when i press the power button

sorry also both the 24pin and 6 pin mobo connections are plugged in, just in case you ask :)

if its powering everything up i cant see why the psu would be the problem, in my experience they either work or they dont.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, and yeah - it was the PSU.

Started off not POST-ing, then SATA rail went dead.

Can you test in another board?

Wish i could, my other rig is w/c so would be a real pain if i have to do this, but i could give it a go

Honestly mate - try it in another board.

My symptoms were very, very similar. Would POST intermittently, then black screen, then HDD's not recognised in the BIOS. All throughout, all LED's and fans were on, though I wasn't getting a picture.

I eventually found out that it was the PSU simply by testing it in another system. Luckily, I also had a spare PSU for comparison.

Can i ask Enzo what ram slots you have the memory in, i used to have a p5q deluxe where i ran the ram in the 2 yellow slots, on my current i7 build i couldnt get a signal as my memory was in the wrong slots, changed it round and it worked ok, could be worth trying both yellow slots.
