I have most of the bits i want to keep, monitor, case, speakers, sound card, network card, likely keep hard drives aswell but im finding the machine just gettin on a bit now and would really like to upgrade. I dont game atall but already have a 4870 anyway so will keep that. Currently pc isnt clocked as it didnt really like it so im running around 2.1 old C2D something or other and have 4gig of ram, what would be a great upgrade for applications, web development, day to day file stuff? Would likely go Win 7 route aswell at same time.

Thanks

If you want to re-use your DDR2 RAM also I'd recomend looking at an AM2+ system, something based around:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £144.98 (£126.07)
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £60.98 (£53.03)
Total: £205.97

Add an aftermarket cooler if youre going to clock

Is there much benefit to going to i assume its DDR3 now?

The only reason i can see how staying with DDR2 is a good thing is it means you save money by not buying more RAM.

TBH, this is offset by the rising cost of DDR2 & the fact that you will one day have to upgrade your Ram & it won't be as cheap as it would be doing it now.
Also, going with DDR3 is more future proof upgrade wise.

Would this lot work? i dont want to overclock

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz (Socket AM3)
Geil Ultra Series 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (GU34GB2133C9DC) -
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
