Help with an ATI Radeon 9200 all in one wonder

Hi All

I am running Win7 RC with an old Nvidia 6600 .I went to play command and conquer ZH but the graphics were corrupt.I think its because the PSU is underpowered only 250W.
So i decided to get my old radeon 9200 all in wonder from my old pc.I installed it and went to install the Catalyst software from the disc but got nothing.
So i looked around online and found an old version of the CCC that had XP drivers for the 9200.Wheni went to install it though it says i need a standard VGA graphics driver before it will install.
I have checked on the windows settings and it says i have a standard driver installed.I have checked to see if there was a newer available but there wasnt.

So im at a bit of a loss.Does any1 have any ideas other than buying a new PSU.

The rest of the system is an old P4 and 768 Mb of Ram.

Not true, i managed to get it working with the windows 2000 drivers.

1. Install the Win2K Drivers instead! (but not the software)(throw on compatibility mode Xp-SP2 just for hell of it… forgot how but computer recommended this setting)
2. Do not restart Computer when asked, instead remove ati2dvrag.dll from system32 folder… put it on your desktop or something.
3. Logoff computer… Graphics will look like hell… log back in and return ati2dvrag.dll to system32 folder.
4. Logoff computer again… Graphics will reset and look great again!
5. Restart Computer (At this point my system shutdown perfectly without blue screen!)
6. When computer restarts, check all setting to make sure your monitor displays properly and the way you like. ( I tested resolution setting and what not and all was well)
7. Shutdown computer again to test and make sure still no blue screen!

The card will work fine but you really should just buy a new one :P
 
Run the windows 7 compatibility checker program. That'll tell you it is not supported. TBH it's way too much of a faff to get it working properly for a card worth about £4, just get a new one, and probably a new PSU. In fact, that machine is probably a bit on the old side to be easy to support with anything other than XP, so you might want to think whether it's actually worth trying to force windows 7 on when XP was probably fine. Put the money towards some new hardware.

But....I just told him a very simple and proven method of making it work?

It's a bodge job though, I wouldn't trust it not to screw up with an update or program etc. Not worth the pain if it's a main PC. I've had problems with the 9200 and Vista in the past...endless problems. It's just not worth it in the end, XP is fine for old hardware.

Bit of a bodge though :p I was talking about using the drivers the normal way..

Well bodge your way over to the MM and sell those old gfx cards, then only a few quid on top (really, less than a fiver) should get something low power that will play nice with win 7.

It works fine. It's not really a bodge, just a way round the fact win 7 isn't a recognisable OS because it was around when the drivers were made. I did this and used the card for like 3 months without any problems on the release candidate.

I'll have to try that with my Geforce FX5700 then...:p
 
Well when i started the machine 6 out of 10 times it would restart and wouldnt boot into windows.It would play some games but just not the 1 i wanted.Landmass etc just showed up as a white mess .So it wasnt even playable.I was using fairly recent drivers 190.38 i think.I tried to get the very latest but when trying to install it kept resetting the pc so thats what made me think it was the PSU.
I may have a look for a cheap PSU on the MM but i begrudge spending anything on this rust bucket :)
