Forget it, all is well, let this thread fade away, got my answer on the 1st reply, no need to say I'm an idiot, it's been done many times in this thread and was my own fault for not explaining well to begin with, ok :D, merry christmas :).

Firstly I find win 7 good but have a big confusion, I have disabled superfetch, search index, folder type discovery, page file, power options performance.
with these tweaks vista 64 sp2 did not eat up all the memory, infact it left me with nearly 7GB free all the time except for when I'm running an app or game, I notice in win 7 it says the memory is cached, but to what?, just disabling superfetch should stop this from happening but it is not, so the only way to get my memory back is to reboot, this is highly annoying, I thought win 7 was supposed to be better than vista, already had a bsod when the patch for the l4d2 demo came out and it corrupted part of my raid0 2 60gb ocz summits and had to reinstall win 7.
I'm on the edge of reinstalling vista 64 sp2.

From a fresh boot

After running backup

On the usage
cpu usage 3%
Memory 1.06GB - Is this how much memory is actually being used meaning the rest is available for apps or games?.

Total 8190
Cached 7134 what does this mean?
Available 7100 so when I run an app that uses a lot of memory or a game it will use this available memory?
Free 26 On vista I used to have what is cached on win 7 as free memory and had no problems at all.

Can anyone explain what gives?, Like I said I'm on the edge of going back to vista because of this 1 thing, I like a lot of the new features in win 7 but I'm not sure about this memory usage.

Sounds like your best bet would be to take the memory out of the PC and put it back in the box. That way you can be sure Windows won't try to use it for anything useful.

So Microsoft fix Windows memory management in Vista and now Windows 7 and you do your best to break it? Way to go.

The only value that matters on that task manager is available RAM, ignore the bit that says free it doesn't matter.

Just love your post and so right, It's amazing what people do to mess up their PC in the name of tweaking:D

It doesn't matter how sure you are. Whether you want to believe it or not, Windows7 is better at Memory Management than you are.

Just let it do it's thing.

i have 1.7gig used on mine and 29mb free, the rest is available
and the systems running fine so i dont see you have a problem.
all services you have turned off are still running on my set up, so it shows you havent really gained much by turning them off.
so you may as well turn them back on

just get on with using the pc instead off worrying about things like this, there is nothing wrong with win 7

Windows 7 memory management is superior to that of Vista as it received some tweakage by MS. The OS is very good at giving up memory for stuff that needs it and it learns too. Stuff you use all the time is likely to be sat in RAM waiting for you.

Go ahead and try and disable it. It begs the question, why bother installing the latest 64 bit OS if you're going to deny it all the extra RAM it can address.

You might wanna turn your pagefile back on too. No reason at all to switch that off. Unless you like performance decreases.

Best thing you can do it reset everything back to default

This, all those things you have disabled actually mean something, You might as well have stayed with dated XP if your going to disable some of the best features of the OS.

You have 8gb of ram why are you worrying?

because he has listened to all the posts on the net about vista n win7 using a lot of resources and its best to turn this n that off, instead of just using the OS as is.
