Q6600 overclocking endeavour

Trying to overclock my Q6600 to 3.6GHz on a P5Q deluxe, which I can boot into no problem. And even play Batman AA. However when it comes to running Prime 95 it falls flat on its face after about a minute.
I had everything on Auto in the bios previously but then I manually set most of the voltages etc And most notably Core Voltage is at 1.43 odd @ 450 * 8 = 3.6GHz

Problem is that Coretemp is reporting very high temperatures (into the 90s). And this is obviously a no no. And in fairness P95 does fail after about 10 mins.
Hex mentioned that I could drop the core voltage and play around with the FSB, PLL and NB voltages to compensate, but I have had no luck.

Now I dropped my FSB to 440 * 8 = 3.52GHz and P95 runs no problem.
But I still have this temperature issue.

Now... short of adding extra fans etc (I have a red scorpion with the fan from the scythe ninja on the scorpion) + 2 case fans in a P180 antec case both set to low, is it realistic to be able to get Vcore of around 1.40 and still be able to run at 3.6GHz or is this just a pipe dream?

And as a last alternative, are there any high performance fans which are silent? For example I like the Antec Case fans (Tricool I think they are). Is there anything similar to those but with a higher CFM? Would putting two fans on the sink benefit?

Cheers.

90c :O

whats temps at 3.52?

72c max for Q6600 matey, its bullet proof but not 90c bullet proof

Need more airflow, whack fans up and then see temps?

Yea I heard 75C max for the Q6600...

With P95 at 3.52 again its around 90c... this thing goes from 50 odd to 90 odd... its quite a heat haul...

Tbh, I dont want to have a noisy case... are these antec fans not good enough for cooling?

Better airflow is always a good thing but it will not make a huge difference in your case. Main thing is the CPU cooler but yours is actually quite decent. Seems like an odd problem assuming you mounted it properly and applied the thermal paste correctly.

You tried any other programs for measuring temps eg. HW Monitor?

HW is reporting same temps as coretemp.
The sink is hot... cannot be touched (when priming ofcourse, so Im guessing the CPU has good contact since its dissipating the heat through to the sink...
Problem is the airflow in the case I think...

I think the chip will do it all by itself when it hits that temp.

As for fans, Noctua make some great fans that are quiet & pump a lot of air out, The Akasa Apache is also very well rated for silence & air shifted.

I don't really know your HS, I have a TRUE running 2 noctuas & that keeps my Q6600 under 60 while in prime95 (9x400 with 1.38v)

Wow it auto throttles regardless of any settings in bios (when it reaches Tjunc?)

And this Noctua fan, how do they compare to the tricool? Whats the CFM and noise on this thing?

Noise wise I would say about 2x better, don't really know how good the tricool's are, I have them on my 900 but spec wise I don't know what CFM they shift.

This week only has the Apache for £10, not the best looking fan (nor is the Noctua) but it does perform. The Noctua ones are more like £19 or so (last I looked)

I could be wrong about the throttling thing, it is what I was led to believe.

Fellas. I run a qx6700 at 3.6ghz and I have it sitting under a Corsair H50 and my prime temps never go over 56, having said that though I have really good airflow in my case and im not after a silent rig. I play a lot of music whilst, surfing, gaming word processing etc. I have the Antec tricools on my build and they are not to bad set to medium they push a good amount of air and my rig is stable and most importantly very cool.

I have 2 of these in my P182 on a fan controller (as they make some racket at full pelt compared to antecs tricools on low) but they can shift some amount of air on full speed though. Hard to beat at that price too.
