Am I the only one who isn't in a mad rush to take shots of fireworks?

Now don't get me wrong I've seen lots of very impressive firework photos and would love to take some myself.

But each year when it boils down to it I'd much rather just go there, have a hot burger in the freezing night and just enjoy the show with my mates?

Is this weird?

I'm going to the fireworks display in Billericay, Essex this Saturday which is supposed to be the best one in the area by far - I'll take my camera to take shots of my mates larking around and stuff but I'm 99% sure when the show starts it'll be in the bag and I'll be standing there watching and enjoying :)

Whos with me?

Unless done truly well, for me a firework shot is just a picture of a firework. I think you need a special firework to help make a special picture.

I'd be far more interested in getting a good long way off and taking photos of the show from a different elevation, but there are limited places you can do that. I'll be at my place in Lancing this weekend, and there could be some opportunities to get up on the Downs and look down. However, as Phate suggested, I'd rather take my 9 year old to a show, play with a few sparklers and wolf down a burger and Coke.

Woooh, I'm going to Lake Meadows on Sat too! :D

I will take my camera, but all too often I end up experiencing things through a camera lens and it's about time I stopped and just enjoyed the show - so that's exactly what I'll do :)

I agree. Nov 5th is actually my birthday, so if I go on the day (it's always nice to see loads of fireworks on your birthday hehe) I obviously don't want to be walking around with a tripod etc. But I have had some really nice experiences of shooting fireworks in the past. It gets boring very quickly though I find (in the grand scheme of things).

Whos with me?

I have a very specific firework picture that I am after, capturing the explosion of a mortar, with the exposure finishing before things start to "droop".

So far, I have exactly one decent example, taken two years ago, but I would like more:

It needs perfect anticipation and tracking. You need to press the shutter just before the bang and hand-hold for a half-second exposure.

I'll be trying to do it again.

I wish I could take advantage of the rock-steady IS in my 200mm f2.0 but don't want to be using a lens without a protective filter on the front on firework night...

The difference between a good fireworks photo and a great one is context. Without it, the photo doesn't show scale and ultimately fails at what the fireworks itself intended to do. So to take a good firework photo, you have to combine it with a good cityscape photo. Pick a spot that shows that city's famous iconic building, frame it (a little looser), pull out a bit to give room for the fireworks, and then wait and hope.

my 2ps.

I would like to go and try snapping some fireworks, but it's always so busy, plus I don't even think I'll be going this time. If I could get across the river I might be able to get some shots, but it sounds like way too much effort.

i agree with every thing raymond said. i've been to a few displays and while i did enjoy taking pictures, fireworks alone dont hold much intrest for me, if however you have a nice landscape to compliment the fireworks then the pictures hold a lot more value.

out of hundreads of photos i've got saved this is the only one i really like.

I've been meaning to go out and take photos of fireworks ever since getting my first SLR. Still yet to actually bother, since when it comes down to it, I'd rather be inside in the warm :D

did it a couple of years ago, but meant i didnt get to enjoy the display. would rather watch display with my kids than spend all the time counting "one, one-thousand, two, one-thousand, etc, etc" and keeping a weather eye out for the chavs

I'm also off to the Billericay show although unsure if I'm going to take my camera or not, end up spending too much time messing with settings and missing the actual display.

Well I just got back from the Stockton show and believe I got the shot I was after.

What do we all think? :)

Also submitted it to the local rag to see if I can get my name in there :D

I'll be enjoying the show at weston park or audlem, however I will be taking a few photos at the local school show :)

Lovely pic...Because it is complemented by the background as Raymond says. And here is a pic with no background at all. pretty colours and that's it. However I seem to have deleted the rather better ones so this will have to do!
