Nvidia CEO talks FERMI; says RV870 is "not that fast"

although [RV870] it’s a fast chip, it’s not that fast and it is basically an RV770 with DX11

Thats a laugh coming from the head of a company that could do nothing but rebadge cards for the last few years. Even if 870 was just a 770 with dx11 its a hell of a lot more than nvidia have done as of late.

I'm looking forward to it. I've got a 8800GT that has served me well for a couple of years now. About the mid point of next year, i'll be wanting to upgrade. I hope affordable fermi(s) are available then. I'm looking forward to some quality stereo 3-D action :)

Another spot-the-fanboy thread....*sigh*

don't start that old argument. it's getting tiresome now

there is a lot of NV bashing yes but when the CEO comes out with rubbish like he has he'll get shot down.

he's no proof in what he is saying so therfore is rubbish. if he has got proof then please share with us otherwise please don't say anything.

it would be the same if it was AMD/ATI doing this.

if the new FERMI chips are "revolutionary" then i hope it doesn't come at a premium for those who want to buy it.

As always I am happy to wait until there is an awesome card at an awesome price and a game that I just have to max out with nice frames :)

Nvidia drivers are just gambling wich will work good and wich doeasnt. G80 series drivers were UBER **** at the start(they needed almoust half year to make them right)

With Vista only, vista wasnt worth using during the first 6 months so no big loss, in fact it was only worth using once SP1 was released.

When i got my 320 in feb 07 there were no new drivers until just before 2900 came out if i can recall about 3 months later

Got to agree with him that RV870 is basically RV770 plus DX11. It is essentially the same architecture as RV770.

Not that I think that is a particularly bad thing though, new or old architecture or not doesn't matter balls, it's all about features and performance.

I think you`re being harsh. It`s called marketing. If you ran your own company, would you not try to raise awareness of the product, build demand and increase enthusiasm for the new product to potential customers before it`s ready for the market?

I`m sure they have a good idea of what the new architecture will bring. Someone mentioned that they don`t have a chip yet or one chip clocked to low but don`t you think there will be much going on behind closed doors? You and I won`t have any real idea, neither will the people speculating.

I love this competition. I`m not a big fan of Ati in the past but I do currently have a 5770 and it`s great for this time. I didn`t like the 4850 though, but the 5770 has the low power usage, DX11, stuff NVidia don`t offer at this time so is a great entry - mid level card.

yup there is nothing new and amazing about the RV870 other than it's decent clocking 40nm with a heck of a lot more of the same stuff on the chip.

Would like to see a new architecture from AMD even though this current one is working pretty damned well at the moment.

i would yes but only if i had the facts to back it all up with

But maybe they do but don`t want to release the exact details yet as it opens the door to the competition starting development of new cards to match. The longer they leave releasing the specs, the longer after the products are released it`ll take for the compeition to match or catch up.Maybe the do have something special.

It`s also hype too, humans love hype I`m afraid. Build the hype before the product is released and you can demand higher prices because the demand is so high. ALl marketing :)

Whats your problem?

A CEO of a rival GPU manufacturer is talking up his future product. Shock horror.

What he says is the truth.
The new ATI 5770 is a continuation of the older technology. DX 11 is a pretty minor release, the GPU architecture is very similar. This is nothing bad, the new ATI cards are fast enough, low powered and support DX 11.

The previous NVidia cards have only been incremental improvements since the G80. As we all know, Fermi is a whole new architecture.

There is no mis-information here.

Then the CEO simply claims Fermi will be faster than R5770. So what? What else do you expect him to say?Nvidia know the performance of ATIs card and knows what will be possible in the future with increased clocks and dual cores etc. Nvidia have engineering samples of Fermi and also their theoretical analysis.

By all accounts Fermi will be faster than the current ATI offerings, but so what. That is not an interesting question. How much faster, what price, what power, what noise, what will ATI do in response?

he has no clue saying 5870 is a RV770 with DX11, heck a 5870 is two RV770 with DX11 and some tweaks, btw AMD has had a tesselation unit in their chips since Radeon HD 2000 and even has one in Xbox 360, and NVIDIA has none

AMD first with DX9
AMD first with DX10.1
AMD first with DX11 before windows 7 release date and 8-Channel 24bit/192khz Lossless DTS-HD/TrueHD Blu-Ray Bitsteaming over HDMI

and dont forget that AMD can beat NVIDIA on price, just like HD 4000 series has done before
you also got that AMD hasnt fully utilized the new chips yet and has promised better performance in catalyst 9.12

one last thing AMD can make more Evergreen chips per waffel and can put two of them on a card at a cheaper price than nvidia can ;P

Lol ok keep your hair on.
