Normal to be 'unhappy' with my iMac?

I don't really understand why people buy Macs, only to run Windows on boot camp. Why pay a premium to own a Mac only to run Windows on it?

Genuine question. What's the point?

I don't understand the people that buy a Mac, then want to remove OS X and run only Windows. They're blinkered, short sighted and only interested in the styling. They also usually end up complaining that it's not a proper PC after a couple months, the go off an buy an alienware or someat.

Boot camp exists for the following reasons :
1) To run that PC game you like that doesn't have a Mac version
2) To run that bit of PC software (eg corporate VPN client) that doesn't have a Mac version

Some people don't want a Windows machine, but need to run the occasional app for work etc.

Having a machine that can dual boot both operating systems is handy.

Also, Boot Camp is free and an optional install so it just gives you an extra degree of freedom if you absolutely must have Windows.

Buying a Mac to strip off OS X to put on Linux or Windows is a complete waste of money and in these instances I would just cry

Well, it won't meet universal approval but because they're well designed and well built machines. I'll pay a premium for good design when I'm buying other things so why not a computer?

Personally I wouldn't buy a mac to run windows, I'd buy a high end dell latitude, but then again I wouldn't touch windows given a choice...

Going back to the original point, I played around customizing PCs when I was 15 or so but that was really the end of it, today I want a machine which works and does the things I need it to (music, photos, email etc etc) - I don't have time to fix things or mess about tweaking it, I need it to work every time.

Now if you do want to mess about customizing and tweaking your PC then I'd suggest a mac just isn't for you to be honest...

I have both, a pc to fiddle with water cool or not as i removed that recently, upgrade bits and arse about with. Then there is my macbook pro, plays wow natively and i use it as my email, browsing, web developing, picture editing, msn chatting, music listening, word processing, well every day machine i guess.

Horses for courses, really. I moved to a mac precisely because I was fed up of dicking around with windows. Boot camp for games is enough, especially as I have a wii as well.

I'm pushing for a Mac Mini in work, purely because this PC is junk and XP is starting to get on my breasts.

I use Excel 2007 for about 60% of my work day and I'm worried that booting in to Windows 7 will just render the purchase obsolete so I can't see it happening.

I could use a VM but I really am too lazy to be faffing around, so I'm stuck.

Just make sure they buy you a licence for Parallels 5 as well.

Now that I've got a job which relies on a stable platform, I can't afford the time or money a fine-tuned PC would (and has) cost me. I had two catastrophic incidents at uni which left me without a doubt in my mind that I had to leave the PC modding scene behind a buy a mac.

I think that was more to do with you than the cost of a PC vs. Mac :p

I got my first Mac (this one i'm using now ;) ) just before Uni. Before that I always used a PC (building my own). Now i've finished Uni I think getting a Mac was probably a mistake. Not because I don't like it and Mac OS X, but the whole Apple platform (and where it's going) makes me want to get out of it. Reasoning:

Now i'm no longer a student, Macs are total rip-offs (if I wish to not break agreements and basically lie that I am still a student). Plus as I like to keep software updated i'm "forced" to pay £70/year for iLife of which I only use iPhoto.

They ramrod you into a computer. Plain and simple. Want a 15" screen on a laptop? That starts at £1,299  Already have a monitor? Either a £499 Mac mini or a £1,899 Mac Pro. The sheer lack of choice is unforgivable.

Despite the fact that Mac OS X is written by Apple for computers made by Apple, they tend to be worse than Microsoft when it comes to updates, upgrading and security*. My Leopard/Snow Leopard experience has been no better than that of a Vista SP1 installation with 5mins of configuring disabling some stuff.

The App Store shows the very essence of Apple. Beautiful UI, great experience, but a place where they have total and utter control over you, developers and the platform. It's Apple's way or just **** right off!

Microsoft Office for Mac isn't really compatible with Windows Office. Whatever Apple or Microsoft says.

More and more the platform is becoming irrelevant. I can use Windows, Mac OS X and Ubuntu perfectly well. Windows can easily do everything OS X does. Ubuntu is slowly getting there as well. Sure Windows and Ubuntu might take more initial time in getting it running how I want, but once it's up it's up.

When the recession hit, they put the prices of Macs UP. They did this so $ into £ + VAT was the same. Despite my hatred of them doing this purely for themselves (£1 in the UK, when you live in the UK, is still £1), what I hate them the most for is when it was $2 to £1 the prices never matched up. "Cost of doing business in the UK". My Arse. I bet now that the Apple plebs have shown they'll pay the new prices in the UK, Apple won't bother putting any prices down when/if the pound recovers.

At the end of the day I just don't really care about Apple and letting them enjoy their high profit margins any more. A £300 Acer jobbie will do just fine for a laptop, and I can build my own desktop.

*They took AGES to fix this. Mozilla did it in a couple of days, I think Apple took something like 2 months.

I have to admit that I don't find OS X any better than Windows both do things well it just that they do different things better.

All this talk about maintaining windows I haven't had to do anything with both Vista machines I have other than window updates. My main PC still runs a 4 year old install of XP Pro which has never crashed and went through a couple of motherboard/CPU upgrades this only needs window updates. (I have just changed all the machines to Windows 7 which installed just as easily as Snow Leopard). I admit I had a lot of mucking around using Windows Vista as a HTPC however Windows 7 with TMT 3 and Media browser has it pretty much plug and play now not bad when you consider a Mac can't play a blu-ray disk in OS X.

My girlfriends MBP does run well but still requires updates just like the Windows machines and it has hung once which certainly didn't amuse her. The only way to recover it was to power it down losing some of the work she was doing.

As to buying a Mac to put windows on it I don't think it is a great idea unless you get the student discount then it makes more sense. The equivalent Dell XPS 13" works out more expensive than a 13" MacBook Pro which you also get a free 3 year warranty with.

I get this, i have a MBP which i mainly use for Pro Tools, I find myself really wanting to commit 100% to mac but i end up always having to use windows, be it for college or wanting to play game, if i had not spent a lot on money on all ym games i would have going to mac by now but i have a gaming rig which cost a lot and i find myself always having to use it. If only apple would let their os run on other HW it would be a better world to live in.

Hell I've been an Apple user since the Classic - ain't no way I'm going back to a PC full time.

I use a PC for my job and a Windows 7 desktop at home for gaming and that's enough for me.

So I'm the opposite to the OP...

Is maintaining a computer and fiddling with software tweaks really that fun?

Surely creating things is more fun. Be it programming, digital music, digital art, or whatever.

I use both Windows and Mac computers every day, so it's not an either or decision for me.

I do both. And would take Windows over Mac OS any day tbh.

Well i'm just about to bootcamp my MBP but its purely just to play the odd older game and have access to microsoft office software. I do like osx but i would feel more confortable knowing i had xp there if i really needed it. It resolves many comptability issues on the move as well, if for some strange reason it doesnt work in osx you can just boot into windows and giev it another try.

I don't care. Everyone just use what they like.

What I meant was that if someone like the OP is bored and unhappy because they have nothing to maintain or tweak, then they should do something more worthwhile and set about creating something.

interesting post, have been tempted by the 27" mac looks sweet but not sure if i can swallow the gaming on a 4850 with that screen:( I personally love windows and ms never had any problems with the os bar drivers and hardware as i get through quite a bit of it. I have a macbook which i use and like. Too early to tell with the mac but i like the style i can live with the os as i have found all the apps i need. It has crashed a few times tho requiring a power off so not perfect. pc since day 1 mac for about 6-7months i think. Like them both.
