Nikon D3000 or D5000?

Hi guys,

I've been looking to buy a DSLR camera.

I'm particularly keen on two Nikon cameras

Nikon D3000 and the Nikon D5000

The D3000 costs around £400

D5000 = £530

Nikon are currently doing a cashback offer
£30 off a D3000
£60 off a D5000

has anyone had one of these cameras before?
Which one shall I get?
 
as i understand it, a D3000 is basically a D40, updated, and a D5000 is a D70 with live view ?
 
If the D3000 is anything like the D40, then it's a great beginners camera. My D40 is still doing everything I want a year and a half since I got it.

Are you liable to get carried away? If you can scrape together the extra for the D5000 the better high ISO performance may stop you upgrading as quickly as you might with the D3000. The D5000 also has liveview and combined with the flippy-out screen makes low-angle or over-head shots easier.

That said, once you've scratched together enough for the D5000, the D90 starts making more sense for better handling and inbuilt motor for AF of older (non-AFS) AF lenses. :p

don't think I would get carried away just thought I would try getting a new camera
I handled my mates DSLR a few days ago and it felt great.

think the D3000 is similar to the D40
so might just get it cuz I can get £30 cashback too

Thats a lie anyone who gets a camera gets carried away. I want this lens, I want that filter, that tripod would help a lot etc etc

But seriously, I'd go with the one for the better sensor if you can push to the £400. Nothing worse than thinking if only once you've bought the cheaper and lesser camera (not that splashing out £350 for a proper DSLR is anything you do lightly)
 
Go for the D5000 (and 18-105mm lens) if you can stretch to it. There's no doubt that the D3000 is an excellent starter camera but it is just a revamp of the D60. The newer technology in the D5000 is worth the extra and the camera will last you longer in terms of what you can do with it.
 
Personally .... I would get a D3000 and upgrade to D90 or better should you get into it or if you are certain you will then buy a D90. I think the D5000 is awkwardly placed due mainly due to its price which comes from being a tad gimmicky. I would prefer to pay the extra for an inbuilt motor myself, hence D90 recommendation.

I have a D40 which I have owned for a couple of years now; absolutely love it. Spend the money on glass and then upgrade the body 'when' you find your own constraints. :)
 
yer I think the d3000 would be better off for me right now

I'm going to try ease myself into this photography world and I can get the camera for just under £400 decent price me thinks
 
D3000 is a great starter camera, the in built user guide is quite useful for DSLR beginners too.
